Background Summary:
City Commission requested staff to obtain a cost proposal from Progress Energy to extend the existing highway lighting
system on Maguire Road from the current terminus to the south City Limit. Progress Energy has provided a cost
proposal,which includes an initial design &construction cost of$47,082.85 and a monthly rental fee of$625.14 for the
additional lights.
Issue:
Proposal by Progress Energy to furnish and install additional highway lights on Maguire Road to south City limit.
Recommendations
City Commission to consider the proposal by Progress Energy and provide direction to staff.

Financial Impact:
The current (FY 04-05) does not contain sufficient funds for the design and construction of the lights. If the City
Commission desires to install the additional lights, staff recommends that this project to be considered and added to the
FY 05-06 budget under Public Works project.

RE: Extension of Highway Lighting on Maguire Road to City Limit
ISSUE
Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commission approve installation of additional highway lights on
Maguire Road at a initial design& construction cost of$47,082.85 and monthly rental of$625.14?
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
City Commission requested staff to obtain a cost proposal from Progress Energy to extend the existing highway
lighting system on Maguire Road from the current terminus to the south City Limit. Progress Energy has
provided a cost proposal, which includes an initial design & construction cost of$47,082.85 and a monthly
rental fee of$625.14 for the additional lights.
Staff has determined that installation of the additional lights is warranted and will provide a benefit to the
residents of the area. However, the current(FY 04-05) does not contain sufficient funds for the design and
construction of the lights. If the City Commission desires to install the additional lights, staff recommends that
this project to be considered and added to the FY 05-06 budget under Public Works project.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff respectfully requests that the Honorable Mayor and City Commission to consider the installation of the
additional lights on Maguire Road and provide direction to staff.
