SUBJECT: USE OF FORFEITURE FUNDS TO PURCHASE RADAR UNITS
STAFF REPORT
ISSUE
Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners approve
the use of forfeiture funds to purchase three (3) Radar Units and
one (1) visual speed commander to be utilized for better traffic
enforcement in school zones, neighborhoods and high accident prone
areas.
BACKGROUND
Currently, the Police Department has two (2) working radar units
that are approximately ten (10) years of age. The upkeep and
maintenance to keep these units in working order is very costly due
to the age of the units. These units will be utilized as trade-ins
on new radar units. The new radar units come with a three and a
half year warranty.
DISCUSSION
Due to the rapid growth of our City, the population and traffic
flow through our City has increased tremendously. One of the major
law enforcement complaints received by the Police Department, as
well as City Commissioners, concerns people speeding through
residential areas and school zones. In order to regulate the
traffic problems in our City it is necessary that we have the most
up-to-date equipment which will enable us to better enforce the
traffic problems throughout the City. In addition to the three (3)
radar units we wish to purchase, we would also like to purchase a
visual speed commander which is a large remote display that will
remind motorists to check their own speed and immediately gain
voluntary speed compliance.
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and Board
of City Commissioners approve using forfeiture funds not to exceed
$7,200 to purchase three (3) radar units and one ( 1) visual speed
commander.
