HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-04-1995 Proclamation - Confederate History Month - April PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, April is the month in which the Confederate States of America began and ended their four year struggle for a sovereign and independent nation; and WHEREAS, our state constitution sets aside April 26 as a day to observe and honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the Civil War; and WHEREAS, in proportion to its population, Florida contributed more soldiers and sailors to the Confederate services than any other state; and WHEREAS, all Floridians should be knowledgeable about the history of the Civil War battles fought here; and WHEREAS, we study the war between the blue and the grey for the same reason we study all wars, with a view to understanding the historical events that compelled them, so that we may continue to learn to live together and seek to avoid further conflicts; and WHEREAS, Governor Lawton Chiles has declared April as Confederate History Month in Florida; and WHEREAS, Confederate Captain Bluford M. Sims was among the early settlers of Ocoee; and WHEREAS, much of the history of Ocoee is tied to the movement of settlers to Florida after the Civil War; and WHEREAS, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Capt. Bluford M. Sims Camp #1630, strive to educate others in the heritage and history of the confederacy and are involved in other community affairs; THEREFORE, I, S. Scott Vandergrift, Mayor of the City of Ocoee, Florida, do hereby proclaim April as CONFEDERATE HISTORY MONTH in Ocoee, and call upon all residents to engage in study of the historical events of 1861 to 1865, and to solemnly reflect on them. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereunto have set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Ocoee, Florida to be affixed this fourth day of April, 1995. S. Scott Vandergrift, Mayor
