Background Summary: The role of law enforcement in all cases, including an active shooter situation is for the protection of lives and property. In order to help accomplish this task, it is paramount police officers have potential lifesaving equipment to utilize. Over the past year, every Ocoee Police Department Officer either has been or will be assigned an active shooter vest. A common piece of equipment utilized in conjunction with active shooter vest, is a ballistic helmet. Ballistic helmets have proven to save law enforcement officers lives, as this was evident in the Pulse nightclub incident in Orlando. The Police Department is requesting the use of up to $40,000 of forfeiture funds (State)to equip every officer with a ballistic helmet and riot face shield. Issue: Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners authorize the Police Department to expend and or grant monies from the Police Forfeiture Fund (State) for the purchase of various law enforcement equipment needed to outfit City of Ocoee Police Department officers with ballistic helmets and riot face shields? Recommendations It is recommended that the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners authorize the Police Department to expend and or grant monies from the Police Forfeiture Fund (State) for equipment needed to outfit City of Ocoee Police Department officers with ballistic helmets and riot face shields. Attachments: None Financial Impact: A total of no more than $40,000 from the Police Forfeiture Fund (State). There is approximately $65,261.49 in this fund.
