Cassey had suffered grand mal seizures since she was two years old. On July 2L
1995, Cassey and her mother, Evie Windham, traveled to Shand's Hospital in Gainesville
so that Cassey could undergo brain surgery to stop the seizures. Through all of this, Cassey
was a smiling and energetic spokesperson for those with epilepsy, doing numerous print and
electronic media interviews. "As A "Winning Kid," Cassey is a shining example of what can
be done today for someone with this terribly misunderstood disorder," stated Charles F.

LOCAL GIRL HITS A HOME RUN FOR EPILEPSY

IT'S OUTTA THERE! Cassey Fleming, "Winning Kid" Representative for The
Epilepsy Association of Central Florida, hit a "home run" for epilepsy on
Wednesday, August 30, 1995 at the Orlando Cubs game at Tinker Field.
Not only did Cassey get to throw the first pitch of the game, but she also
helped educate approximately 2,000 individuals about epilepsy, seizure disorders
and the importance of wearing helmets while playing sports. When asked why it
is important to wear a bicycle helmet, Cassey replied "To keep your head safe. It
is just dumb not to wear one because head injury is the number one cause of
epilepsy!"
Proposed legislation the mandatory use of bicycle helmets has failed to gain
approval to help reduce Florida's lead position as the most dangerous place to ride
a bicycle in the nation. This law would have required children under the age of 16
to wear helmets, starting a life-long practice for most and serve as a role model for
others_

to their inexperience and the greater number of hours that they ride. Both parents
and children need to be educated on the subject of bicycle safety.
Times have changed since many of today's adults were children. There is
more traffic, concrete, and complexity in even a simple bicycle trip. Quick response
emergency care and trauma teams at hospitals keep alive many that formerly died.
But no neurosurgeon can begin to repair the severe damage that can result from
a brain-jostling head impact. Bicycles should be ridden, but with care and
protection.
