SUBJECT: USE OF FORFEITURE FUNDS TO PURCHASE A DATA RECORDER
STAFF REPORT
ISSUE
Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners approve the use of forfeiture funds to
purchase a Dictaphone Data Recorder and a Digital-to-Analog converter to replace the one which was
destroyed by lightening?
BACKGROUND
Approximately two years ago, the Police Department purchased a new Data Recorder for the
Communications Section of the Police Department. This equipment is necessary in order to maintain
efficient audio records of all communications generated through the Communications Section as well as
preserving the integrity of the City and its employees.
DISCUSSION
During a lightening storm, the Police Department's communication section received a lightening strike to
a telephone line which totally destroyed the Dictaphone Data Recorder and the Digital-to-Analog
converter. This equipment is utilized to record all radio traffic and telephone conversations coming into
the Communications Center.
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners approve
using forfeiture funds not exceed $18,400.00 to purchase a replacement of the Dictaphone Data Recorder
and Digital-to-Analog converter, and that any monies received from the insurance company on this claim
be deposited back into the Police Department's forfeiture account to cover the cost of this emergency
purchase.
