This program is called ODYSSEY of the MIND, and I feel that the City Commission, as well as the community, need to be aware of the aspects of OM. My presentation will only take from five to ten minutes. Please advise if this is acceptable. I would also like to request that one or two students be permitted to make statements. It features an annual competition component at a local through international levels. Students solve problems in a variety of areas–from building mechanical i a ' 1 devices such as spring-driven vehicles to giving their own interpretation of literary classics. Through . solving problems, students learn life-long skills such as working with others as a team, evaluating ideas, I - '. making decisions and creating solutions while developing self-confidence from their experiences. OM ``. i Association also develops activities to integrate these same skills into regular classroom curricula. • .14 ' 1 1 1 • WHO RUNS IT? The OM Association, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit corporation headquartered in Glassboro, New Jersey. 1 :9 ' Mr. Robert T. Purifico is OM's Executive Director. Under the direction of OM Association Inc., chartered associations are authorized to run local, regional and state/provincial competitions.They receive logistical support,training material and financial aid from OM Association, Inc. .0 T II : HOW DOES IT WORK? i AIThe program was created by Dr. Sam Micklus, Professor Emeritus at Rowan College of New Jersey ! Irt (formerly Glassboro State College). Working under the guidance of coaches, teams of five to seven students develop solutions to problems and are given the opportunity to test their creative solutions 1-144. against those of other teams. New problems are designed each year and allow for competition in four divisions. Participation in Divisions I, II and III is determined by age. Division IV is for participants in i;, college. i ri * ` In competition,teams are judged in three areas: the effectiveness of the solution to the long-term problem :. '' (200 points); the style of the solution and its overall effect (50 points); and the solution to a spontaneous 1 problem given to the teams on competition day(100 points). . � I OM chartered associations' local, regional, state/provincial competitions culminate in.the Odyssey of the VMind World Finals held annually in late May or early June. Competing teams represent top finishers in __ .4 each U.S. state and many international countries. More than 700 student teams (totaling nearly 5,000 it.,;,i students) participate along with their coaches. In addition, over 300 adults help officiate the four-day A j event.The estimated attendance at World Finals is 14,000. WHO PARTICIPATES? , ' Vie When the program began in 1978, 28 New Jersey schools participated. Today millions of young people have participated in Odyssey of the Mind. There are member schools in all 50 states, the District of ;"g` Columbia and many other countries as diverse as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, Germany, j Japan, Mexico, Russia and Saudi Arabia.0 ' i01 English is the official language of the Odyssey of the Mind Program.
