Dear Mr. Shapiro:
I would like to respectfully request time on your April 16th City
Commission Agenda in order to present a new and innovative program
which my students had the fun and privilege of piloting at Ocoee Middle
School this year. This program is called ODYSSEY of the MIND, and I feel
that the City Commission, as well as the community, need to be aware of
the aspects of OM.
My presentation will only take from five to ten minutes. Please advise if
this is acceptable. I would also like to request that one or two students
be permitted to make statements.
Thank you for considering my request.

WHAT IS THE ODYSSEY OF THE MIND SCHOOL PROGRAM? e,
F •
The ODYSSEY OF THE MIND School Program fosters creative and problem-solving skills among •
t. li participating students from kindergarten through college. It features an annual competition component at a
local through international levels. Students solve problems in a variety of areas–from building mechanical

' 1 devices such as spring-driven vehicles to giving their own interpretation of literary classics. Through
. solving problems, students learn life-long skills such as working with others as a team, evaluating ideas, I - '.
making decisions and creating solutions while developing self-confidence from their experiences. OM ``.
i Association also develops activities to integrate these same skills into regular classroom curricula.

* ` In competition, teams are judged in three areas: the effectiveness of the solution to the long-term problem
:. '' (200 points); the style of the solution and its overall effect (50 points); and the solution to a spontaneous
1 problem given to the teams on competition day(100 points).
. I OM chartered associations' local, regional, state/provincial competitions culminate in.the Odyssey of the
