RE: Kaiser Climbing Excavator
Conversion to Panolin Biologically Degradable Hydraulic Fluid
ISSUE:
Whether or not to convert the hydraulic fluid in the Kaiser Climbing Excavator to
biologically degradable fluid.
BACKGROUND:
The Kaiser Climbing Excavator was purchased with the hydraulic system charged with
conventional petroleum based fluid. As this equipment is used to maintain stormwater
ditches in the City, a leak or failure of the hydraulic system poses the potential for
contamination of the drainage ditches and adjoining lakes. Also, the equipment head
hydraulic motor and pins and bushings require overhaul.
During the mid-year budget amendment funds were allocated for the hydraulic fluid
replacement and inadvertently placed in the 6400 capital equipment account. The
equipment supplier, Pioneer Hydraulic, has provided a quote of $3,796.62, to perform
the hydraulic fluid conversion and the equipment head repairs.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff respectfully requests permission to proceed with the above listed repairs to this
critical piece of equipment.
