RE: FOUNDERS DAY ENTERTAINMENT AND FIREWORKS
As decided last month, the money in the budget originally slated for the 4th of July
celebration will instead be used for Founders Day. The $25,000 is adequate to cover
stage, sound, talent, and fireworks similar to what was planned for last year's 4th of July
celebration.
Staff would like to discuss the possibility of taking the event to the next level with
respect to the entertainment and fireworks. The Founders Day Committee is already
working very hard to have the best celebration ever. There will be more historical
displays and exhibits, -a bigger and better car show, lots of games and rides, arts and
crafts, and other things going on during the day.
The Second Annual Founders Day Golf Tournament will start things off on October 15th
and then Founders Day will start out with the First Annual Founders Day 5-k Road
Race, and a parade.
What staff would like the City Commission to consider is the possibility of joining with
the West Orange Chamber of Commerce and other sponsors to raise sufficient funds to
have a nationally recognized name for entertainment as well as a first rate fire works
show to possibly being choreographed to music. In discussing the dollars necessary to
put on an event of this magnitude, we have determined that it could cost upwards of
$50,000 or more.

Founders Day Entertainment and Fireworks

We do not have a lot of time to work with because national entertainers book far in
advance. If the Commission is willing to take a chance on this, staff will get to work
immediately to determine whether we can raise the balance of the funds needed. - In
making the decision, it is important to note that significant sponsorship money for these
types of events usually come from food vendors and beer and/or wine sales at the
event. The City would not actually be selling food or alcohol but rather sharing in the
proceeds in order to fund the event. The City would, however, be able to control the
sale of alcohol by limiting the area where it could be sold and consumed. This would all
allow us to open the show to the public without having to charge admission.
Because this would be our first attempt at obtaining sponsorships it is also possible that
we may come up short and have to come back to the City to fund the difference. Again,
if the City Commission wants to pursue this, the staff will start in this direction
immediately. Otherwise, the staff will proceed with booking talent and ordering a
fireworks show in line with the current budgeted funds.
