RE : Status of Western Beltway
Thank you for the opportunity to represent you before the Florida Legislature and
to provide this status report on the Western Beltway. During the past six months Juarez
& Associates have maintained contact with the Chairman of the Transportation and
Appropriation Committees in both the Florida Senate and House of Representatives.
The Florida Legislative leadership met with Tom Barry, the Secretary of the
Florida Department of Transportation and the Secretary has assured them that funds are
available to begin the Beltway project. Further, the Transportation Department has
established the following.
• The Department of Transportation will soon begin to purchase portions of the
required right-of-way to commence the project.
• Construction will soon begin on that portion of the Beltway located north of
the Turnpike exchange. No firm start date has been established.
• The Florida Department of Transportation recently met with Walt Disney
World to formulate that portion of the Beltway extending from Walt Disney
World to the Florida Turnpike.
As a further note the Department of Transportation, at the November 12'b meeting
of the Metroplan Orlando Board, is seeking an amendment to the Transportation
Improvement Plan that will allow for the transfer of $3.5 million dollars in Federal -
- transportation funds to the construction of the Interstate 4/County Road 46A Interchange.
In summary, the Department of Transportation is committed to commence the
Beltway project and will soon begin the tedious process of right-of-way purchase.
