RE: Reconstruction of Football Field at Central Park
ISSUE :
To determine the extent to which we resurface the Football Field at Central Park.
BACKGROUND:
The Central Park football field is grassed in Bahia grass which is not tolerant to rigorous
physical activity such as football. The field has not been previously leveled or grassed
properly which has resulted in extensive damage to the playing surface. The surface is
extensively grass bare and uneven creating an objectionable and uncomfortable playing
field that could affect the players and games.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff respectfully recommends that the surface of this field be properly and professionally
leveled with the more durable Bermuda sod which is normally used on this type of
playing field. Professional leveling will create an even playing field that allows proper
drainage without the large areas of standing water to further damage the playing area.
The less expensive alternative would he to simply sod over the existing field with
Bermuda Grass but the uneven surface will continue to plague the players and pose a
maintenance problem with an irregularly mowed grass.
We have received informal quotes from several companies for sod delivery and
installation. The range is $18,200 to $26,000 for delivery and installation.
For complete restoration including leveling and preparing the playing surface we received
one quote of$41,000. These are only informal quotes and arc to be used only as a
guideline.
Staff recommends a complete restoration of this ball field with an estimated cost of
$45,000 to be paid for from contingency funds which has a current balance of$216,274.
