CORWIN PUBLIC WORKS DIRECIOR 560 FLEWELLING AVE. •OCOEE,FL 34761 PHONE(407)877-8420•FAX(407)877-0392 STAFF REPORT DATE: May 30, 1997 TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners FROM: Richard Corwin, Public Works Director j49— RE: Sound Dampening of City Hall Lobby ISSUE: Whether or not to consider Soundsoak commercial acoustical wall panels as an alternative to carpeting, ceiling tiles or hanging panels to reduce sound transmission in the lobby of City Hall. BACKGROUND: A memo dated April 30, 1997 to the City Manager proposed the use of ceiling tiles to dampen lobby noise. These tiles are applied to the existing ceiling using an adhesive. The alternative use of carpeting was determined to be costly due to heavy pedestrian traffic that would create high maintenance and replacement costs. Hanging panels would interfere with lighting and fire sprinklers. A third more desirable method is the use of"Soundsoak" wall panels installed behind the receptionist, the south wall above the bench and on the face of each counter. RECOMMENDATION: We recommend the use of"Soundsoak" acoustical wall panels because installation does not require extensive construction or renovation of existing structures for installation. These panels are used extensively in buildings with open areas like the City Hall Lobby to control noise levels. These panels will not significantly alter the appearance of the lobby area because there is a wide selection of covering materials and colors available that closely match the existing color scheme of the lobby. The cost of"Soundsoak wall panels is estimated to be $6 per square foot installed or approximately $4,000. This is only a verbal estimate and is contingent upon any additional installation or written quotes that may be requested.
