FOR IMVIEDIATE RELEASE
Winter Haven Marine Dealer to Enter Water Ski Hall of Fame
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Water skiers Mike Osborn, 58, of Winter Haven, Fla., and
Alan Kempton, 48, of Tampa, Fla., will join the ranks of the Water Ski Hall of Fame in
April at the annual induction ceremonies to be held at Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven.
‘ 11‹. They are the 38th and 39th inductees to be honored since 1982.
Osborn is recognized as one of the sport's all-time best Men's jumping
competitors. In 1959, he won Men's jumping at the National Championships with a
142-foot leap, tying the famous Joe Cash's world record. Osborn also won the Masters
' tournament jump title in 1959 and 1960.
Although he was known for jumping, Osborn excelled as a three-event skier as
well. He won the overall title at the 1959 National Water Ski Championships and came
in third overall the following year. Osborn also was a force to be reckoned with at the
Masters tournament, placing second overall.in 1960 and '61.
As a member of the 1959 U.S. Water Ski Team, Osborn returned from the World
Championships in Milan, Italy, with the bronze medal in Men's overall. In individual
events, he placed second in slalom(tie), third in jumping and eighth in tricks. Osborn was.
also a show skier, beginning his career at Cypress Gardens when he was 15 years old. He

became the'first Corky the Clown to wear overalls instead of the clown outfit now worn
in Gardens' ski shows.
Osborn's water ski fame lead to his appearance in a Rapid Shave commercial in
1959 and 1960. The spot showed him skiing over the jump ramp while shaving and
saying, "Make it fast, make it smooth."
For many years, Osborn has stayed involved in skiing and boating through his
marine dealership, Osborn Marine, in Winter Haven, Fla., where he resides with his wife,
Nancy. The couple has three sons --Mark, Mitch and Matt.
• Kempton was a solid three-event skier, consistently taking the top slots at both
the Masters and the U.S. Nationals. He won the Masters Men's overall title in 1967 and
1969, and also was Masters jump and tricks champion in 1967. Kempton went on to
place second overall at the 1969 National Championships with a first place in tricks,
second in jumping and third in slalom.
Kempton's perfection of the front flip off the ramp earned him acclaim through
photos on the national wire services in the late 1960's. The trick also secured him the
Men's National tricks crown for three consecutive years, beginning in 1967.
As a member of the 1967 U.S. Water Ski Team, Kempton captured gold medals
in Men's tricks and jumping. He was also a member of the 1969 World team.
In addition to his prowess in skiing, Kempton also was an innovator in the sport.
He was the first to introduce the arm sling for jumping, using it to ease a sore shoulder.

Later, he noticed the sling's ability to help control the movement of his arms during the
jump and continued to use it. Eventually, the sling caught on and is standard equipment
for most of today's water ski jumpers, allowing them the control they need to leap
distances of more than 200 feet.
The 1998 Water Ski Hall of Fame 16th annual induction ceremonies will take
place on Saturday, April 25, at Cypress Gardens. For a detailed schedule of Hall of Fame
activities, please contact the Hall of Fame office in Winter Haven at (941) 324-2472.

Water Ski Hall of Fame Announces
1998 Award of Distinction Recipients
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Water Ski Hall of Fame selection committee recently
announced the 1998 recipients of its prestigious Award of Distinction: Dr. Dave Watson
t\y P P g
of Greenville, S.C. (deceased); Cyndi Benzel of Groveland, Fla.; Glenn Sperry of Fort
‘ 11‹. Worth, Texas; Dick Nock of Skokie, Ill.; and Artis Price of Libertyville, Ill.
Watson was one of water skiing's top judges during the 1960s and '70s. He was
an appointed judge at the Masters Tournament in 1962 and remained active for the next
11 years, lending a hand wherever he was needed whether it was as Chief Judge or
scoreboard operator. As Chief Judge at the National Championships in 1966, Watson
instituted the first Qualifications Judge position. Since that year, a Qualifications Judge
has been named at every Nationals. Watson also served as Executive Vice President of-
the American Water Ski Association's (AWSA) Southern Region in 1957. He died in
1986 at age 68.
A nationally-ranked competitor for more than 30 years, Berizel reached her
career peak in 1981 and 1982 with back-to-back overall wins in Open Women at the
National Water Ski Championships. A dominating force in Open Women during the late
1970s and early '80s, she moved into Women 2 in 1985 and has continued to lead her

divisions. Benzel has also been active in the sport as a water ski coach and a three-event
judge. She is currently competing in the Women 4 division.
Sperry is still active in show skiing after more than 40 years in the sport. Over the
years, he has traveled the world as a skier with such shows as the Tommy Bartlett Water
Ski and Stage Show. Sperry also directed other local and traveling shows and continues
to do so. He recently directed a water ski show in China. Although not officially
documented, Sperry has been credited with creating show ski stunts such as skiing
around the boat, stilt skiing and double-double jump. Last year, he mastered a pair of
seven-foot, three-inch stilt skis and his new goal is eight feet.
In 1967, Price was chosen as one of the"Outstanding Young Women of
America" for her achievements in water skiing and service to her community through
water ski clinics by an advisory board headed by first lady Johnson . Price is believed to
have competed in more National Water Ski Championships than any other female skier.
She skied in her first Nationals in the Women's division in 1960 and has competed in
every one since with the exception of 1963 when she took time off to give birth to her
daughter, Kathryn. Price also was the first senior woman to be invited to the Master's
Tournament.
Nock, a senior driver and senior judge, has been involved with the AWSA since
1959. Through the years, he has been an appointed judge and driver at many National
Water Ski Championships as well as regional and local tournaments and clinics. He has
also driven the JunioreWorld Championships,World Disabled Championships and

National Disabled Championships. An AWSA Director for 12 years, Nock served as vice
president and was on various committees. He was chairman of both the Rating and Rules
committees. Nock currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Water Ski
Educational Foundation (AWSEF) and is chairman of the Foundation's Nominating
Committee.
The AWSEF Award of Distinction recognizes individuals who have made
extraordinary contributions to the sport. Recipients may include tournament skiers,
innovators, industry leaders, officials and others responsible for landmark achievements

American Water Ski Educational Foundation
AMERICAN WATER SKI EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
(AWSEF)
The American Water Ski Educational Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit public foundation
dedicated to the preservation of the traditions of one of America's most popular family
recreational activities, and to the encouragement of and education in the safe enjoyment of the
challenges of water skiing.
To these ends, the Foundation administers the Water Ski Hall of Fame in Winter Haven, Florida,
supervises scholarship programs to further the education of deserving water skiers, and provides
an orderly means of financing other activities which are consistent with the spirit in which the
Foundation was formed.
The American Water Ski Educational Foundation was established in 1968 and has five main
functions:
•
-Promote and provide scholarship programs for the advanced education of water
skiers.
-Provide a water ski research center to include an extensive film and resource
library.
-Provide a showcase museum for the sport, recognizing great achievements
through displays, archives, memorabilia and in ceremony.
- Support teams of water skiers for recognized international competition.
-Promote and provide other programs which are consistent with charitable and
educational activities.
The roots of these programs go back to 1976, when the Foundation (AWSEF)joined with the
American Water Ski Association (AWSA) in a major fund raising drive for the construction of a
new Association.Headquarters building that would also provide some 3,800 square feet of space
for the Foundation. Ground breaking for the building, in Winter Haven, Florida, occurred in June,
1976. The building was occupied on November 19, 1976, and dedicated on January 22, 1977.

page 2--AMERICAN WATER SKI EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
The Foundation Board of Trustees met in a vacant headquarters on January 23, 1977, and began
to carry out the plans for the future of the Foundation.
Walt N. Meloon was elected President in 1979 and a year later a full-time executive was hired,
who began to push languishing committees into action. By January, 1981, the Board had adopted
new bylaws, accepted the procedures for selecting Hall of Fame members, elected the first
selection committee and optimistically set a date for the first induction ceremony.
Later in 1981, Robert Hicks replaced Meloon as'president. The Trustees adopted Bob and Willa
Cook's ambitious construction program for the Hall of Fame, along with a $200,000 fund drive,
under Earl Robertson's direction, to pay for it.
On the weekend of April 17& 18, 1982, the first Water Ski Hall of Fame tournament and
induction took place exactly as scheduled. For many,it was the first evidence of a tangible
existence for the Foundation.
Now, as AWSEF enters its 30th year of operation and stages its 16th annual Hall of Fame
induction ceremony, the transition from a paper organization to a functioning entity has been
completed. In fact, the Foundation has outgrown its current facility. _
By the year 2000, the Foundation and Association will make another"Quantum Leap" by moving
to a Water Sports Complex on Interstate 4 in Central Florida's Polk County, the"Water Ski
Capital of the World". A new campaign began in April, 1997, to raise the funds to begin
construction on property already purchased by the Foundation midway between Orlando and
Tampa. '

A variety of scholarships for water skiers are available through the American Water Ski
Educational Foundation (AWSEF). One program, begun in 1983, offers scholarships to qualified
members of the American Water Ski Association(AWSA). The applicant must be an incoming
sophomore, junior or senior, studying full-time at a two- or four-year accredited college or
university. AWSEF has awarded 78 such scholarships since 1983, totaling $86,000.
General guidelines for consideration include the number of years the applicant has
belonged to AWSA, academic achievement level, two letters of reference (one academic), work
record and school/community activities. Also considered are the individual's contributions to the
sport as a skier and as a worker at water ski tournaments (judge, driver, committee work, and the
like). Students from all disciplines of the sport (traditional & collegiate, barefoot, kneeboard, ski
racing, show skiing, disabled, wakeboarding) are invited to apply.
The annual scholarship awards are announced by the last week in July. Applications must
be requested in writing and the deadline is March 1 each year. Send requests to:AWSEF

U.S. TEAMS
(Restricted Fund)
In 1968, the American Water Ski Educational Foundation was formed with elaborate
intentions and a single, simple purpose: achieving tax deductions for those wishing to help support
the United States Water Ski Teams. The intentions were incorporated into a set of bylaws by
three founders, the late Merrill LaPoint, Russell Barlow (who provided legal work) and William
P. Barlow Jr. (who secured the tax exemption in 1969 and served as president for three years).
With Lorraine McCormick's pioneering efforts, the U.S. Team Fund grew and satisfied the initial
goal of AWSEF.
The Foundation solely funded the U.S. Teams from financial gifts of individuals and
companies and Regional and National auctions until 1989 when AWSA undertook the
responsibility.
The Foundation continues to accept contributions to assist the Association in funding the
U.S. Teams for travel to international tournaments.

WATER SKI HALL OF FAME
The purpose of the Water Ski Hall of Fame shall be to honor and
perpetuate the names and accomplishments of skiers, pioneers, and
officials whose dedication and competitive achievements at National
and International levels have brought lasting fame to the sport of
water skiing. Permanent archives shall be established and maintained
for the collection and display of memorabilia related to the lives
and accomplishments of those selected for induction in the Water Ski
Hall of Fame and others who have participated in the sport through
the years. Inductions generally take place annually for those elected
by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
CATEGORIES OF HALL OF FAME MEMBERSHIP
1. Four categories of membership have been approved by the Board of
Trustees .
A. Competitive water skiers, including participants in
traditional water skiing, barefoot skiing, ski racing and any
other nationally competitive individual discipline recognized
by the AWSA and approved by the AWSEF Board of Trustees .
B. Water skiing pioneers
C. Water skiing officials (established in 1983)
D. Show skiing (established in 1994)
ELIGIBILITY FOR PIONEERS
1 . This category is neither defined nor definable, but it is
intended for people whose contributions to the sport do not fall
into the other categories . Ralph Samuelson and Dick Pope, Sr.
are examples. Those whose principal contributions are as water
skiing officials should not be considered as pioneers .
Individuals whose qualifications relate to the development of a
specific discipline should be considered based on the importance
of their contributions to the sport of water skiing as a whole.

ELIGIBILITY FOR COMPETITIVE SKIERS
1. Only U.S. skiers qualify. This is not intended to be an
international Hall of Fame. This would best be defined as
someone who would have been eligible to ski on the U.S. Team at
the World Tournament, assuming that there is a World Tournament
in a particular discipline. For many years U.S . citizenship was
not required to enter our Nationals .
2 . No member of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee is eligible
during his term on the Committee.
3 . The skier must have skied in the U.S. Nationals (or U.S . Open
Tournament) at least five years . Three of these years must have
been in the Open Division (or U.S . Open) . For those skiers whose
competitive careers were completed prior to the establishment of
the Open Divisions ( 1973) , three years competition in the U.S.
Nationals in either the Men' s, Women's, Boys ' , or Girls '
divisions will be required instead of five years . For
competition prior to the establishment of the Open Divisions, the
Men' s and Women' s divisions are regarded as equivalent to the
Open divisions . Competition in the Boys ' and Girls ' divisions
during this period would also be considered, but only by relating
their performances to those of the Men's and Women' s divisions.
4 . A skier must have been retired from Open competition for at least
five years (as of the date that election is to be announced) to
be eligible. The skier may, however, continue to be active in
Senior or other divisions or as an official or may be otherwise
involved in the sport.
5 . One and two event skiers are eligible.
6 . The Committee will consider the following factors in voting on
competitive skiers:
A. Major factors:
J . Open skiing record in the Nationals and other major
tournaments
II . World and U.S. Open records set
III. Sportsmanship, character and integrity
B. Minor factors:
I . Competitive record in the Nationals in divisions other
than Open
II. Competitive record in the Regionals (Note: Record in
local tournaments will not be a factor)
III . Records set in divisions other than Open
- more -
ELIGIBILITY FOR COMPETITIVE SKIERS (cont'd. )
B. Minor factors (cont'd. ) :
IV. Service as a judge, driver, administrator, or in the
promotion of the sport
V. Competitive record in disciplines other than the
principal discipline
ELIGIBILITY FOR OFFICIALS
1. It is not possible to lay down specific qualifications in
category as broad as that of water ski officials . Generally a
candidate would be recognized for major contributions to the
sport over a considerable period of years . Election is not based
on isolated outstanding contribution. At the same time, mere
length of service, however dedicated and generous, that cannot be
said to have contributed significantly to the progress of the
sport in one or more areas is not sufficient. The emphasis is on
achievements, not of offices held or time served.
2 . The term "official" is intended to encompass a wide range of
functions within the sport. Primary consideration is given to
contributions to the sport as a judge, driver, scorer, AWSA
officer, or administrator, WWSU officer, executive committee
member or administrator, AWSA national committee chairman or WWSU
council membership. With respect to WWSU positions, only service
by U.S. citizens to be considered. Secondary consideration is
given to contributions as Regional councilman, tournament
chairman of major tournaments, tournament announcer, and water
skiing writer or promoter. With respect to all of these
functions the emphasis is on contributions of a national or
worldwide significance - not a regional or local significance.
Candidates are not generally judged on a single function, but
rather a cumulation of contributions in all the areas in which he
will have contributed in several areas, even though one may
predominate.
3. Generally, 15 years of service to the sport at local, national or
world-wide levels is required as a minimum for consideration, but
exceptions may be required in extraordinary_ circumstances. Mere
length of service, by itself, will never qualify an individual
for consideration. Length of service is more a measure of the
extent of the individual ' s dedication to the sport.
4 .. Retirement from active involvement in the sport is neither a
requirement for nomination nor is i.t encouraged. Generally a
candidate will not be considered when there is still a great deal
more he may be expected to contribute. At the same time the
committee will not wait for the candidate' s death or senility to
recognize significant contributions to the sport.. Generally a
minimum age at inductions of 50 is required unless the candidate
was clearly retired prior to that time.
- more -
ELIGIBILITY FOR SHOW SKIING PARTICIPANTS
1. Although show skiing is , recognized by the AWSA as a team
competition, teams are ineligible for induction into the Hall of
Fame. Individuals involved in competitive, or other organized show
skiing can be considered, however, whether their contributions
have been as performers, show directors, promoters, announcers or
boat drivers .
2 . In considering individuals for the Hall of Fame in this category,
their contributions should be assessed in relation to the
advancement of the sport of water skiing as a whole, including
the increase in awareness and appreciation by the public of the
sport. Activities which have little or no impact outside the show
skiing discipline are not sufficient for recognition in the Hall
of Fame.
ELECTION PROCEDURE
1 . Nominations for induction to the Hall of Fame may be made to the
Committee by any committee member or by any AWSEF Trustee. The
Committee expects a written rationale to accompany any
nomination.
2. Deadline for accepting nominations; is June 1.
3. Appropriate research will be carried out by the Committee using
the facilities of AWSEF Headquarters .
4 . Once this is complete the Committee will vote. Election requires
the affirmative vote of eight of . the ten members of the.
Committee.
5 . Induction was limited to 12. individuals in the first year and
seven each year thereafter. If more than the maximum receive
eight votes only the top scoring number will be elected with
additional balloting to break ties if necessary.

WATER SKI AWARD OF DISTINCTION
This award was created to recognize many individuals who have
made extraordinary contributions to our sport. They may include
tournament skiers, innovators, industry leaders, officials and others
responsible for landmark achievements in the development of water
skiing as well as those whose long periods of dedicated and generous
service deserve special recognition. Even those who have later
become famous outside the sport and others whose contributions have
been in the form of resources or public relations are eligible for
nomination for the Award of Distinction.
There is no requirement that a candidate to be recognized for
his or her skiing accomplishments be retired from competition,
although preference is unlikely for skiers still competing in the
Open Division who are clear candidates for the Hall of Fame following
their retirement. Those honored with the Award of Distinction remain
eligible for nomination to the Hall of Fame.

The following are the technical requirements which apply to the
selection procedure:
1. Nominations are to be made to the Chairman of the Hall of Fame
Selection Committee no later than June 1st of each year for
recognition a year later. Nominations may be made by any member
of the Selection Committee, any member of the AWSEF Board of
Trustees, or any other individual with the endorsement of a
member of the Committee or the Board of Trustees.
2. Nominations must be in writing and should include as much
information as possible on the justification for the award, since
this nomination will form the basis for consideration by the
Committee. Bearing in mind that there have been thousands of
individuals who have won national or international skiing titles,
held volunteer offices and committee chairs, and devoted
countless hours to judging or driving, emphasis should be made of
the unique and distinguishing achievements or contributions of
the individual proposed to be recognized.
3 . Each Committee member, by written ballot, will rank those
nominees whom they believe should be considered for the Water Ski
Award of Distinction. For selection., a nominee must be ranked by
eight members of the Committee.
4 . Membership in either the AWSA or AWSEF is not a criteria for the
award; however, it is intended that the award be for
contributions to water skiing in the United States or to
international water skiing on behalf of the United States .
