RE:World Final Competition Information
Dear Mrs.Clark
h is my pleasure to inform you that Ocoee Middle School has once again captured the State
Championship title for Odyssey of the Mind. As you kn• ,this year our team's problem, RatiOMetric
Structure, was to create and build a balsa wood and glue :trUcture that could weigh as much as the team
desired. The team could then stack as many weights as •ossible to determine how much the structure
held. What makes this problem RatiOMetric in nature is at although the structure may hold a great deal
of weight,5001b$. has been set as the tournament maxi in. The team with the best ratio wins, not the
best weight held. The ratio is determined by dividing the ,mount of weight held,up to the maximum of
5001bs., by the weight of the structure. Thus, the lightes structure that holds the most weight wins. At
state competition our 10.47 gram structure held 4001bs. • ing us a ratio of 38.2 lbs. held per gram of balsa
wood.
At the end of May we will again have the pleasu : of taking on the top teams in the world from 48
states and 38 foreign countries at the World Finals co • tition at the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville. However,as you know, this is a long and expo sive trip. I have enclosed a listing of the costs
that I have anticipated so far in an effort to give you as m h information as possible to assist us in our fund
raising. All calculations reflect a total for 6 team membe : myself and one other chaperone for a total of 8.
Lodging and Food for the Trip:$335 per person
$335 x 8 =$2,680
Transportation
Airfare on Delta Airlines: $186 per person
$186 x 8.$1488
'This does not include necessary ground transp•nation while there
Charter Bus by Florida Motor Coach. $3830
•This does not include lodging for the b s dnver which could average$200.
With a charter bus the team would have use of th bus for the duration of the stay. Also,a team
from West Orange High School has won and will be alto •ing World Finals. The bus seats 47 people and
we may be able to share the bus with the high school tea and their chaperones. The airfare does not
include necessary ground transportation for the team or •haperones, however,it is a great deal less
expensive. When I explored the other option, train. I di ••cared that Amtrak does not travel near
Knoxville.
As always,we appreciate your support and enco ragement. I know you are as excited for the
team as I am. Once again, thank you for you help with lu d raising so that Ocoee may again take on the
world.

NON-AGENDA ITEMS
ODYSSEY OF THE MIND
William Meginley, Ocoee Middle School, referred to the May 24, 1998, Orlando Sentinel,
"Orange Extra," which contained a front page article about last year's Odyssey of the Mind team
from Ocoee Middle School. He gave a history of the team and introduced Robert Meginley,
Adida Guya and Michael Meginley, team members. He said during the three and a half years the
Odyssey of the Mind team has been in existence, it has placed first or second in the regional
tournament and in the top ten in the state. Last year the structured team won the state title and
was able to go to the world championship. Because of the generosity of the City and IBM,
which was a corporate sponsor at one time, and several other organizations and parents, the
students have been able to participate and produce top-notch teams. Three teams are preparing
for the regional tournament, which is March 6. The program has run out of funds, and at least
$165.00 is required to pay the registration for the three teams for the regional tournament. Other
costs are involved, and each team is allowed to spend a maximum of$100.00 to buy materials to
solve the problems. He requested a contribution of$400.00 from the City.
Commissioner Parker, seconded by Commissioner Glass, moved to donate $500.00 to the
Odyssey of the Mind teams from Ocoee Middle School. Motion carried 4-0. (Conunissioner
Anderson was absent.)
