Proclamation
WHEREAS, one violent crime is committee in America every 19 seconds; and
WHEREAS, 36.8 million Americans arc victims of crime each year, and of those, 9.6 million
arc victims of violent crime; and
WHEREAS, crime victims play an indispensable role in bringing offenders to justice; and
WHEREAS, victims of crime deserve respect, resources, restoration, rehabilitation and
justice; and
WHEREAS, crime victims and their advocates over the past two decades have made
unparalleled progress in securing rights and services for crime victims; and
WHEREAS, victims of crime arc working to ensure that Victims' Voices are Silent No More;
and
WHEREAS, as a nation devoted to liberty and justice for all, America must increase its
efforts to protect, restore and expand crime victims' rights and services; and
WHEREAS, Ocoee is joining forces with victim service programs, criminal justice officials
and concerned citizens throughout Ocoee and America to observe National
Crime Victims'Rights Week;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, S. Scott Vandergrift, Mayor of the City of Ocoee, do hereby
proclaim the week of April 25 to May 1, 1999 as
CRIME VICTIMS' RIGHTS WEEK
in Ocoee, and urge all government agencies to reaffirm their commitment to respect and
enforce victims' rights and address their needs not only during Crime Victims' Rights Week,
but also throughout the year.
