Dear Mr. Shapiro:
Health Central, in partnership with Gema G. Hernandez, Secretary, State of Florida Department of rider
Affairs, is taking the lead for the state program called "Elder Ready Communities". As our local
population continues to grow and age, the need for our West Orange communities to provide for"elder
friendly" services through planning and development will be of the highest importance.
There are three phases to this program. The fiat is the adoption of the "ELDER READY COMMUNITY
RESOLUTION". A copy is enclosed.
The second phase is to appoint a volunteer committer in conjunction with your planning department to
assess the community's current status for seniors and issue a COMMUNITY REPORT CARD FOR
WELL ELDERS (Pink). After completion of Community Report Card on Well Elders, the community
would then issue a REPORT CARD FOR FRAIL ELDERS (Yellow), and if applicable, the community
would then issue a REPORT CARD FOR RURAL ELDERS (Green).
The third phase is to then implement through the planning process and future development to prepare
your community as an `IlIder Ready Community"_
We respectfully request this presentation he placed on an upcoming Commission meeting that would be
convenient for your schedule. Once it has been placed on your agenda, please contact my office at 407-
29E-1140 with the date and time for our presentation. I have enclosed information for inclusion in your
agenda packets for your elected officials and staff.
I Icalth Central cun-ently has two very active programs that have tremendous participation from our senior
citizens, the West Oaks Walkers and Senior Central. l'he majority of these participants live in our West
Orange communities and have offered their volunteer services to assist in helping their communities with
this project. If you have any questions or need any additional information, please let us know.
We look forward to working with the West Orange communities on this important issue_
