Staff Report
Date: April 2, 2001
To: The Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners
From: Janet G. Shira, Community Relations/Projects DirectorJ-
Subject: Founders' Day Entertainment and Fireworks
Issue
Should the Mayor and Commissioners authorize staff to enter into contract negotiations for
entertainment and fireworks for Founders' Day?
Background
Both the headline entertainment and the fireworks are estimated to be at or over the $15,000 limit
that necessitates City Commission authorization for expending funds.
Discussion
Staff would like to formally enter into negotiations for the headline talent which will necessitate
City funds of $15,000 to $20,000. The balance of funds for the talent and associated costs will
come from sponsorships.
Staff recommends using Zambelli Internationale for the fireworks presentation again this year.
The price will remain the same ($15,000) for the same level of show.
The Founders' Day Committee is in agreement with both these requests. They have voted to go
with a national Country Music artist for the headline entertainment again this year. Once staff
has City Commission authorization,we will then proceed to see which artists are available and
who fits in our price range.
Recommendation
Staff respectfully requests approval from the City Commission to allow staff to offer, negotiate,
and book the headline talent for this year's Founders' Day in an amount not to exceed$20,000 of
City funds. Staff also respectfully requests approval from the City Commission to negotiate and
book the fireworks for the event at a cost not to exceed$15,000.
