RE: 911 Memorial
ISSUE:
Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners approve construction,
placement, and financing of a 911 Memorial?
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION:
I have designed a memorial for the September 11' tragedy, submitted the artwork to
Roseann Gavrolic, who has drafted a plan for this memorial (see attached), and
solicited donations for its' construction. To date I have received commitments from
Florida Metal Craft (for welding supplies and material), Surplus Steel (for welding
supplies and material), Quality Vault (engraving and polishing of stone). Public Works
will dig and pour the footer as well as perform the welding. The monument will be
constructed of steel and mounted on a granite foundation. Overall dimensions are
approximately 10' x 10'. I would like to have the project completed by Memorial Day
2002.
I am asking for a $2,000 contribution from the City to purchase the raw granite for the
foundation ($1,412), concrete and rebar for the foundation ($200), landscaping ($388).
I am also asking for permission to erect the monument in the Veteran's Memorial Park
(behind the Withers-Maguire house).
RECOMMENDATION:
I respectfully request The Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners approve
the $2,000 to help with completion of this memorial. `
