RE: Pond H40, Lake Olympia Club
ISSUE:
Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners approve MVP Grant to Lake Olympia
Club for the installation of a fountain in Pond H40?
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION:
During March 2, 2004 City Commission meeting, staff was instructed to evaluate the conditions
at Pond H40, located on the west side of Olympus Drive in Lake Olympia Club. Specifically, if
the subject pond is capable of supporting a fountain as requested by the Lake Olympia Club
Homeowners Association through use of the MVP Grant Program.
Staff has reviewed the construction plans for the pond and conducted a field investigation to
determine the feasibility of supporting a fountain.

The original design calculations indicate a weir elevation of 107.60 and pond bottom elevation of
103.00, for the maximum height of 4.6', which is probable during a very intense rainfall and
storm event. The pond has been designed to stay dry using an underdrain system.
As shown in the photographs, there is approximately 12"of standing water in the pond, which is
most likely due to poor conveyance in the ponds underdrain system. The water stains on the
control structure indicates the possibility of an additional 24" during the high water season for a
maximum of 3' of standing water. The high water elevation is designed to draw down under
normal conditions as quickly as possible. Therefore, under the current conditions, the standing
water will probably remain at approximately 12" and will fluctuate 36"during intense storm
events.
In conclusion, the subject pond is not a suitable candidate for installation of a fountain as
requested.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff respectfully recommends the Honorable Mayor and City Commission disapprove the MVP
Grant to install a fountain in Pond H40 in Lake Olympia Club subdivision.
