Subject: Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. Memorial Highway
Issue
Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners approve a sponsorship for the Dr. Martin
Luther King,Jr. Memorial Highway dedication events?
Background and Discussion
State Senator Gary Siplin recently sponsored a bill that designated State Road 50 from the
Western Beltway overpass to State Road 436 as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
Highway. There will be two events to mark this important and historic designation: (1) a pre-
reception on Wednesday, June 16th, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the downtown Orlando Marriott,and(2)
the unveiling ceremony for the official marker in Ocoee on Thursday, June 17th, at 10 a.m. on
State Road 50 directly across from the Florida Auto Auction.
The unveiling ceremony is shaping up to be a significant occasion that will have the participation
of many dignitaries. Martin Luther King III has confirmed his attendance at both events and will
be joined by many state and local officials. The City of Ocoee has been asked to play an
instrumental role in helping to organize the June 17i event and event organizers have asked that
Ocoee elected officials be in attendance at both celebrations.
The costs of putting together events of this scope are varied. Event organizers are attempting to
assemble sponsors to help cover costs and to help publicize the unveiling. Attached is a list of
the sponsorship packages available.
Recommendation
Staff respectfully requests that the City Commission provide staff with direction on the level of
sponsorship the City will support.

The Honorable Mayor Vandergrift
City of Ocoee

Ocoee, FL 34761
Greetings Mayor Vandergrift and City Council:
I'm writing this letter to urge you to support and participate in the Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Road
Designation Ceremony on June 17, 2004,where our special guest will be Martin L. King III.
This road designation is an important part of history for Central Florida. The legacy of Dr.
Martin L. King Jr. is forever imbedded into the fabric of American History. It is with great
honor that the Florida Legislature passed this road designation bill.
This road designation is not just about resurrecting a sign on a state road, its about resurrecting a
community and a stronger bond with the people of Central Florida. Today, we live in a nation
that is stronger because of Dr. King's work. The road designation is an wonderful opportunity
for leadership to step forward in a concerted effort to celebrate in Dr. King's words, "A land
guided by love instead of hatred and by acceptance instead of intolerance."
I hope that you will join us in our dedication to a great man and our community.
God Bless,
Gary Siplin

Dear Senator Siplin,
It will be my privilege to join you in the unveiling of the official marker designating State Road 50
as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Highway. The City of Ocoee is pleased to assist you
with hosting this significant and historic event. The symbolism embodied in this marker should not
be lost. The Ocoee of today is working to personify Dr. King's legacy of inclusion, compassion,
and understanding. We have a Human Relations/Diversity Board that serves as an advisory board
to the City Commission. The main purpose of this group is to promote understanding, respect,
goodwill, and equality among all citizens and businesses in the City of Ocoee.
Another group, the West Orange Reconciliation Task Force, which has the support of the Ocoee
City Commission, has been instrumental in providing a forum for discussion of race relations, and
has begun to take steps to help us better understand our community's past and how we can reconcile
what has defined Ocoee in the past with the values we strive for today.
The core values that the Task Force established are things we should all try to remember in our
daily interactions...
...that each person possesses dignity, worth, and human rights as a child of God —
regardless of race, religion, or national origin
...that each of us is charged by God, by whatever name He is called, to leave the
world in better shape because we lived
...that each person is entitled to receive from others the treatment prescribed in the
Golden Rule
The road dedication to Dr. King is not only a great way to show tribute to a great American, but it is
a good way to keep these tenets foremost in our minds. Again, on behalf of the City of Ocoee, I
want to thank you for including us as part of the celebration.
Sincerely,
S. Scott Vandergrift,Mayor
