Mark, Chief Of Police L►iy/ DATE: February 7, 2002 SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO UTILIZE FORFEITURE FUNDS FOR THE PURCHASE OF FIRST YEARS LEASE ON TWO (2) POLICE PACKAGE VEHICLES AND EIGHT (8)MOBILE RADIOS. STAFF REPORT ISSUE Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners authorize the police department to use police forfeiture money, not to exceed$37,000.00, to cover the cost of the first year's lease payment of two police package vehicles, and the purchase of eight mobile radios in order to equip these two (2)vehicles in addition to the current police vehicles approved for purchase by Commission for this fiscal year budget. BACKGROUND The City of Ocoee, as well as the Police Department, has been trying to upgrade and increase the efficiency of its City equipment. Vehicles are an essential piece of equipment as the City continues to grow and meet the ever increasing needs of today's demanding services. To this end,the police department is continuing to provide the citizens of our city the best service possible. Effective Budget year 1998, and with the approval by the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners, the police department instituted the in City take home plan/policy for uniform patrol officers now going into the fourth year. A goal of our department has been to have one assigned vehicle per person. With the current fleet we are only two vehicles shy of that goal. The request for two additional vehicles in no way will change the current practice of the City approved vehicle take home policy/program, it will just allow every officer to have their own assigned vehicle. The Lease of these vehicles will cost approximately $7,500 for the first year per vehicle. Due to the current budget restraints, the department also requests that eight mobile radios be purchased with forfeiture money as well in order to properly equip all new vehicles being purchas this fiscal year. _ s 77 11 11 STAFF REPORT POLICE VEHICLE FEBRUARY 7, 2002 PAGE 2 RECOMMENDATION It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners approve this request to utilize forfeiture funds, not to exceed$37,000, which shall cover the cost of the first year's lease payment of two (2)police package vehicles and the purchase of eight(8) mobile radios, and authorization for the Mayor and City Clerk to execute the necessary documents with the City Attorney's approval.
