Parker, District 4 TO: The Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners FROM: Steve Goclon, Acting Chief Of Police;%5-- DATE: July 30, 2002 SUBJECT: APPROVAL FOR NEW SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD POSITIONS FOR THORNEBROOKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STAFF REPORT ISSUE Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners authorize the creation of five (5) new school crossing guard positions to staff school crossings in the southern most neighborhoods along the Maguire Road corridor. BACKGROUND The City of Ocoee Police Department has responsibility for the school crossing guard program within the city limits of Ocoee. This program is essential for the safety of elementary and middle school children who walk and bicycle to and from school. There are several subdivisions within two (2) miles of Thorncbrooke and Lake Whitney Elementary schools for which the police department must provide crossing guards. The opening of Thomebrooke Elementary School at the south end of the city at the beginning of this school year will require the addition of four (4) new crossing guards. The realignment of Tomyn Road and Windermere Road within the city limits creates the need for one (1) new crossing guard for children going to Lake Whitney Elementary School. Each crossing guard will work approximately 500 hours per year at a cost of approximately $5,000 each (for an approximate total of$25,000). The monies for these guards will come from existing salaries for the remainder of this fiscal year. RECOMMENDATION It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners approve this request for additional school crossing guards so that the police department may hire and train the needed guards as close to the upcoming school year as possible.
