Parker, District 4 STAFF REPORT TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners FROM: Jean Grafton,City Clerk If DATE: October 25, 2002 1 RE: TIIE CITY LOGO AND THE OFFICIAL CITY SEAL ISSUE Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commission formally adopt the city logo as pictured above and authorize for use as the corporate seal the original city seal that was retired in 1986? BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION During the past year this Commission authorized a new city logo to be designed and the intent was to incorporate the logo into a new city seal, as was done with the previously adopted logo/seal. That logo was round and adapted easily to duplication as the city seal. As the style of the new logo is more oblong/oval than round, suppliers of embossing seals have advised the logo would have to be modified to fit into either a round or rectangular shape embosser. This means that the corporate seal would not be identical to the new logo; and, although it seems to be a generally accepted practice to not have the seal the same as the logo, rather than go to the expense of buying a"near miss" staff suggests the Honorable Mayor and City Commission adopt the original corporate seal which was adopted in 1925 and retired from use in 1986, authorizing its use as the official city seal again. That seal says simply "City of Ocoee, Orange County, Florida" around the perimeter, with "Corporate SEAL" in the middle. It is in the classic lion's head style embosser and has rested in the City Clerk's office next to the Ocoee Cemetery Association seal that was retired in the seventies. RECOMMENDATION Staff respectfully recommends the Honorable Mayor and City Commission formally adopt as the city logo the logo as depicted at the top of this page and authorize staff to prepare an Ordinance to adopt the original corporate seal used from 1925 to 1986 and authorize its use as the official city seal.
