RE: Expenditure of funds to determine feasibility of using United Methodist
Church complex as a police complex
ISSUE
Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners authorize the police department
to spend not more than $15,000 out of contingency for an architectural firm to determine the
feasibility of using the United Methodist Church complex as a police complex.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The City of Ocoee authorized a Spatial Needs Assessment for the police department. The
assessment, completed in 2001 by Architects Design Group (ADG) of Winter Park, indicated
that the current police building, built in 1994, no longer meets the spatial or functional needs of
the police department. ADG designed the new Ocoee Fire Station currently under construction
on South Bluford Avenue as well as the new Winter Park Public Safety Building. ADG has
experience in the design of existing building renovation projects.
The United Methodist Church located at the corner of Floral and Kissimmee is centrally located
in the city and has potential for development into a police complex. A professional architectural
assessment of the existing buildings is necessary to determine whether or not the buildings can
be converted for use as a police complex and to determine what the costs would be to renovate
those buildings.
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners
approve this request to authorize the police department to spend not more than $15,000 out of
contingency for Architects Design Group to determine the feasibility of using the United
Methodist Church complex as a police complex.
