Commissioners S. Scott Vandergrift ,►..'?-.., Danny Howell,District 1 Scott Anderson, District 2 Acting City Manager Rusty Johnson, District 3 V. Eugene Williford, III z_ Nancy J. Parker, District 4 STAFF REPORT TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners FROM: Robert B. Zaitooni, P.E., Deputy Director Public Works DATE: June 15, 2004 RE: Third F.A.S.T. National Girls' Softball Championship ISSUE: Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners approve $2,000 from General Fund Contingency to purchase 10 pole banners to be installed along Maguire Road welcoming the visitors to the City of Ocoee? BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION: The West Orange Girls Club is hosting the 3`C F.A.S.T. National Girls' Softball Championship beginning July 12 through August 7, 2004. This is not a City sponsored event and although, the West Orange Girls Club is located outside City limits, it is anticipated that the visitors and players will be staying in Ocoee contributing to the local economy. The West Orange Girls Club has requested the City to purchase and install banners to welcome the visitors and players to Ocoee. The cost of 10 pole banners with nominal dimensions of 2.5' x 5' and attachments is estimated at$2,000.00. Funds are available from the General Fund Contingency. RECOMMENDATION: Staff respectfully requests the Honorable Mayor and City Commission consider this request and provide direction to staff on the purchase of banners. yam,.; Department of Public Works,301 Maguire Road,Ocoee,FL 34761 Phone:(407)905-3170,Fax:(407)905-3176,www.ci.ocoee.fl.us 05/26/2004 16:04 100 MAYOR SCOTT PAGE 01 OCOEE WELCOMES THE F.A.S.T. NATIONAL GIRLS SOFTBALL PLAYERS To the Ocoee Commissioners: The West Orange Girls Club, (WOGC), is hosting its third F.A.S.T.National girls' softball championships. We wouldiike to request that the City of Ocoee place a two-sided banner across Ocoee-Apopka RI)welcoming the almost 10,000 people that will visit our city. We understand that the West Orange Girls Club is not currently in the city limits of Ocoee. However, the players and their families do support Ocoee's economy by using the hotels/motels,restaurants,;gas stations, West Oaks mall and Health Central; among others. The WOGC directors feel that this would be a great way for Ocoee to thank the players and their families for the support they give the city and possibly entice them to continue to bring their games to the West Orange Girls Club. The games will be starting on July 12,2004 and continuing through August 7, 2004. At the top of this page, we have supplied a simple suggestion for a banner, but you are welcome to change the wording to fit your liking. In closing, the WOGC is in its 30th year, of which 23 years were spent within the city limits of Ocoee, and hope one 41ay to be in the city again. We would appreciate your cooperation with this request as we feel it would benefit both the city and the WOGC. If you are inclined to approve this request, please contact Ernie Romano as soon as possible at 407-877-2151 (office)or 407-402-0347 (cell). Sincerely Yours, Ernest Romano, President WOGC Rupert Warr, Honorary Lifetime Executive Member
