Proclamation
WHEREAS, each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the
history, culture and traditions of people whose ancestry can be traced to Spain, Mexico,
Central America, South America and the Caribbean islands; and
WHEREAS, this observance celebrates the achievements of Hispanic Americans in the arts, education,
entertainment, government, history, law, literature, medicine, the military, music, politics,
science and other endeavors; and
WHEREAS, the United States first observed what was then National Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968
under President Lyndon Johnson, calling upon public officials, educators, librarians and all
of the people of the United States to observe this time with ceremonies, activities and
programs; and
WHEREAS, Hispanics have enriched and shaped our community for generations; and
WHEREAS, Hispanics continue to make significant and diverse contributions to the cultural,
educational, economic and political vitality of the City of Ocoee.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that on this 17th day of September 2019, the Ocoee City
Commission does hereby proclaim September 15th – October 15th, 2019 as Hispanic Heritage Month, and
encourage all residents to honor the rich diversity of the Hispanic community and celebrate the many ways they
contribute to our nation and society.
