VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
• 320 essays submitted, not including Ocoee and Maxey Elementary Schools
• Minuteman of Ocoee will make two copies of each essay for the judges
• A minimum of five HRDB volunteers will be needed to read/judge the essays
• As in previous years, there must be "teams" comprised of "two judges" on each
team
• Beth Otts, Chick-fil-a Marketing Manager (and resident of Ocoee), has volunteered to
be a judge. Ms. Otts will bring Chick-fil-a food for the essay judges.
• Ms. Otts will need to partner with a HRDB Member on a 'judging team'
• For the judging session, the Tom !son Center is available on Wednesday, February 12
and Thursday, February 13, 6:30 p.m. —8:30 p.m. Please select one of these dates.
• Essay Contest Awards Ceremony will be held at City Hall, Wednesday, February 26
at 7:00 p.m.
• Volunteers are needed to assist with the Essay Contest Awards Ceremony

2020 Competition Rules
Requirements for Each Essay:
1. School Name
2. Student Name
3. Teacher Name
4. NO staples (Paper clips only)
5. Typed essays
6. If handwritten,one side of paper only
The theme for the 2020 Black History Month Essay Contest, sponsored by the City of Ocoee Human
Relations Diversity Board,is"A Vision of Hope".
Each essay submitted to the competition will need to address this theme by discussing what does
"A Vision of Hope" mean to the writer. How do the students'hope'the world will be? What is their
vision and hope for the future based on their personal experiences. Do they hope their school,
neighborhood or community will change and grow?
Essays should be limited to approximately 500 words.
Judging will be based on the degree to which the essay meets the requirements of the adopted theme,
conforms to the rules of the competition,and serves as an example that can be adopted by others.
• For each participating school,there will be one (1)first place winner declared,who shall receive
a prize valued at$50.
• An overall winner will be selected from all participating schools and will be recognized and shall
receive a grand prize valued at$250.
• Additional certificates of merit may be awarded to the authors of other papers depending on the
quality of submissions.
• In addition,the overall winner will be invited to recite their winning essay at the city's Dr. Martin
Luther King,Jr. Unity Parade &Celebration.The winner will also be invited to serve as the Grand
Marshal for the parade.
• The overall winner will be the first-place essay at one of the participating schools; only the grand
prize will be awarded to this student. Prizes will be awarded in the form of cash or a cash-
equivalent gift certificate.
