HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-06-2020 Minutes CITY OF OCOEE Minutes of the Human Relations Diversity Board Regular Meeting Held February 6,2020 I:CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chair Crown at 6:20 PM in the Commission Chambers of City Hall located at 150 North Lakeshore Drive,Ocoee. Chair Crown led the Board in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, followed by a moment of personal reflection. Recording Clerk Sibbitt performed roll call and declared quorum not present. Present:Chair Crown, and Members Anderson-Robinson, Daily, Hart, and Fontanez Absent: Members Foster,Calloway, Dawkins, Maxwell, Dorsey, Carr, Bonzil-Juste,and Porter-Smith Also Present: Mayor Johnson, Assistant Support Services Director Gaines, City Attorney Cookson, Assistant City Manager Shadrix, and Recording Clerk Sibbitt II:BUSINESS FOR DISCUSSION A. Approval of Minutes for the HRDB meeting held January 2, 2020: Approval of minutes was postponed to the March 5th HRDB Meeting as a quorum was not present. B. Public Comments: Chair Crown entertained comments from the public. As there were no comments,she briefly welcomed and introduced Rollins College student, Christelle Ram, who is working on her Capstone Project on the history of Ocoee. C. MLK Parade Update: Chair Crown asked if any members present had any information to share regarding the MLK Parade event.The following suggestions and concerns were shared: • Consideration for time limits on speeches—i.e.,20-minute limit,or less, per speaker. • Inappropriate Political floats not be allowed; Parade rules to be put in place and enforced. • Consider a different layout of the stage to assist with the acoustic of the audio. • Ask Citrus Elementary to keep the gate on the sidewalk between the library and school open for pedestrians to use so they do not have to walk around to get to the event. Staff Liaison Gaines updated the board on the MLK Parade budget and advised that all payments have been mailed to vendors and Honoraries. He acknowledged concerns regarding the chairs at the event and shared that the vendor was apologetic,and City staff will take their concerns into consideration for future events. D. Black History Month Essay Contest:Chair Crown briefed the board on the upcoming essay contest for which 320 essays have been received thus far with more to be submitted. She asked for volunteers and inquired when essays would be available to be picked up. Assistant Support Services Director Gaines addressed her question. The following members were named as volunteers to read essays: Chair Crown, and Members Anderson- Robinson, Daily, Hart, Dawkins, and Calloway. Recording Clerk Sibbitt advised she will post a notice so that the members will be in compliance with Sunshine Law. Chair Crown shared that this year, Beth Otts, Chick-fil-a Marketing Manager(and Ocoee resident), has volunteered to be a judge and will provide Chick-fil-a food for the essay judges. 1IPage Human Relations Diversity Board Regular Meeting February 6, 2020 III: Board and Staff Comments: Chair Crown announced the City of Ocoee and HRDB partnered programs that are currently being shown on Ocoee TV and Ocoee's YouTube page. Update on Black History Essay Contest Chair Crown further announced the date, time, and location of an upcoming subcommittee meeting and asked that the recording clerk please post a notice.
