Our first goal was to identify what we could do to ensure citizens of the city of Ocoee felt heard and actively come up with a solution to these problems. To do this, we contacted our police department to inquire about the most frequent complaints they received, and learned that it happened to be speeding in residential areas. As students and new drivers, speeding was also a major concern to us, and we agreed that targeting speeding, especially near schools and neighborhood areas, would best serve us and the community as a whole. We decided that creating signs that residents could place in their front yards to promote lawful driving would be the best and most realistic solution to the speeding problem, and we began to design the signs. We came up with two slogans reading """""" and hired a graphic designer to create visuals that represented the overarching messages we wrote. The images and slogans were then arranged into the designs we currently use and then were sent to the sign manufacturers. We requested quotes from different companies and, with the help of our coordinator and various OYC leadership, chose the best budgeting plan for our signs. Through this process, our council learned several important skills including dedication, management, and communication that helped make our service project a success. Developing these skills will not only help us with future outreach, but as the next generation of leaders, public servants, and activists, working together to address issues that the community faces will undoubtedly prepare us for our lives in the future. The last step in our project was to distribute the signs and make the community aware of our participation in local government. As a council, we presented our signs as well as other projects we were working on to the public and our local government officials at the city comission meeting. We allowed them to take the signs they needed and asked the police chief to forward us the addresses of those who filed complaints. Together, we visited our first neighborhood and went door-to-door bringing awareness to OYC and our project by handing out thank you cards and our information while asking them whether or not they would like a sign placed on their property. The residents that we visited were greatly appreciative towards our efforts to listen to their concerns and gave us many warm thanks. We then met up with our commissioners to help find other target areas to place signs in including recreational and schools zones. From this we gained intrapersonal skills and saw tangible results in our dedication and hard work that proved to be very rewarding in the long run.
