HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-18-2021 Supporting Documents 5/8/2021 th After attending the April 20 Commission meeting, I was listening to a radio ad from the Cancer society warning how survivable cancers where not being discovered early enough because people were staying home and not getting screenings during COVID - the cancers show up already at Stage-3 or -4; too late. Obviously, we all have in our thoughts those that lost loved ones, lost a business, or a home, but it made me think about what is not obvious and the hidden damages of COVID. It occurred to me that one of these secondary consequences, was that I had not attended a Commission meeting since October 2019; and I was in the dark on some important issues. As we know, legendary Federal Judge, Damon Keith (1922-2019) wrote in a decision on the importance of open, public hearings after the 9/11 attacks – “Democracy Dies in Darkness” I also recalled that when I would come to the meetings I would see other business and community leaders. Since government can’t solve all of our problems, we would frequently have side discussions on projects of mutual interest to our Communities. In reflecting on this, I have resolved that as we re-emerge from COVID to actively re-engage with City Hall. I have put all the Commission meetings on my calendar – blocking out those dates. I am planning to attend and speak on the issues. Tonight I wanted to share my personal resolution, in case it might encourage others that have their head down working and surviving - maybe you forgot to look around and keep an eye on things at City Hall or stay engaged during the lockdowns. Now is a good time to renew our involvement. I also want to thank all the City Staff and City Employees, the Commissioners, and the Mayor who didn’t get disconnected during this time. You were here serving the City. We are grateful for your dedication, your belief in local government, and your belief in Ocoee. In Windermere, all public events were canceled by local officials, but residents held an observance of their own through the Windermere Never Forgets 9/11 Preservation Committee. Masks were handed out and social distancing was encouraged as the small group came together behind town hall. At the event,Lenny Crisei spoke about his experience 19 years ago in New York City. His brother John Crisei and his best friend's son John Napolitano were part of a 19 member Hazmat group that didn't survive the attack. 'My brother, unbeknownst to me at the time was in that south tower,' Crisei said. `Imagine that, an entire company wiped out in minutes. Gone.' While some were able to gather in-person, other Central Florida cities held virtual ceremonies. DeLand and Clermont streamed pre-recorded tributes on social media. Residents were encouraged to watch the ceremony from the safety of their homes. `Following the events of that tragic day, I'm reminded of how we came together as a nation in the face of hatred and terror,' DeLand Mayor Robert Apgar said in a video message. Officials in cities who held virtual tributes said the measures were temporary and plan to return to in- person ceremonies in 2021."(emphasis added) https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2020/09/11/central-florida-residents-adapt-to-honor- 911-during-a-pandemic/ CITY OF OCOEE 150 N.
