Proclamation
Whereas, Eighty years ago today, the Empire of Japan launched an unprovoked attack on the United
States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and
Whereas, This December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor killed over 2,400 Americans including 68
civilians and destroyed most of our country’s Pacific Fleet at that time; and
Whereas, The day after Japan struck Pearl Harbor early on an otherwise beautiful Sunday morning,
then President Franklin Roosevelt called on Congress to declare the Pearl Harbor attack an
act of war against the United States of America and to officially enter World War II; and
Whereas, Today, Ocoee remembers this eighty year old “…date which will live in infamy…” in the
words of President Roosevelt and the lives of those we lost on that fateful day and all those
people who defended Pearl Harbor during that dreadful attack; and
Whereas, We further remember all those who answered the call to serve our country during World
War II and in all the battlefields across the world and we are reminded of these immense
sacrifices and all that we owe our service members who fight to defend the freedom we
cherish in these United States; and
Whereas, On this day of remembrance, let us reflect on the meaning of sacrifice and heroism and pay
solemn tribute to the American heroes who gave their lives on that infamous day eighty
years ago and during the ensuing battles during World War II.
Now, therefore be it resolved, that the Ocoee City Commission does hereby proclaim December 7, 2021, as the
