STAFF REPORT
Meeting Date: May 16, 2023
Item #: 11
Contact Name: Craig Shadrix Department Director: Craig Shadrix
Contact Number: Ext. 6434 City Manager: Robert Frank
Subject: Discussion and Direction from the City Commission about the Procurement of a City
Attorney. (City Manager Frank)
Background Summary:
Staff requests direction from the Mayor and City Commission regarding making necessary arrangements for
procuring a new City Attorney. City Attorney Cookson, who resigned on April 25, 2023, provided the required
90 days notice pursuant to his contract and will continue to support the City through the transition. During the
previous search in 2011, the Mayor and Commission directed staff to proceed with a request for letters of
interest (attached) and directed staff to provide a short list of firms for interviews before the Mayor and
Commission. Staff needs to begin the procurement process to contract with a board certified municipal
attorney to fulfill the role of City attorney.
Issue:
Should the Mayor and City Commission authorize the City Manager to proceed with the procurement process
for selecting a law firm and attorney to serve as City Attorney?
Recommendations:
Staff recommends proceeding with a Request for Letter of Interest (RLI) for City Attorney Services, and
presenting recommendations after the procurement period has closed.
