I continue to attend the Citizens Public Safety Academy each Wednesday. It’s very informative, but also
hands-on and a lot of fun - we have been allowed to shoot a taser and spent time in the training
simulator with the Police Dept. and we used fire extinguishers and tried the tools known as ‘jaws-of-life’
as part of an extrication demo with the Fire Dept.
On Fridays, I continue my tour of the City’s departments, where I am meeting with each Director –
getting to know them and their staff, and addressing issues for District One. The response from this has
been overwhelmingly positive and we are looking to continue this annually. This month, I visited with
Tom Smothers the Fire Chief, Saima Plasencia the Police Chief, and Rob Frank the City Manager.
TRAFFIC AND CONGESTION
The number one issue is traffic and our main focus is to get Lakewood completed.
Lakewood Update: Paving at Ocoee Village Center is projected for 4-6 weeks – this includes the Utilities
Department revision and approval for the sewer line that will run to the City Park, installation of the
sewer line under 2nd Ave, and paving to connect N. Lakewood and 2nd Ave.
Clarke Road Widening: Construction will begin once the SJRWMD permit is issued
- Plans and revised drainage design calculations were resubmitted to St. Johns on 5/1 for permitting. St.
Johns comments and/or approval is expected within the next 30 days. Finalization of construction plans
will be completed after St. Johns comments and/or approval is received.
- Traffic Mobility is working on signalization plans ahead of resubmitting to Orange County for approval
to construct Clarke/Clarcona-Ocoee intersection improvements. Submittal to Orange County is
expected within the next 30 days.
Ocoee-Apopka Road: Proposing to widen from McCormick to Franklin. Staff needs explore transferring
the road to the City and investigate Orange County transportation spending in Ocoee.
FIRE STATION
We have $5MM in ARPA funding for relocating the temporary Fire Station on Adair to a permanent
location on Clarcona-Ocoee. City Staff needs to finalize the location and move forward with a Private
Public Partnership to construct the new facility.
