U.S. Military
“…Many civilians and veterans alike have good intentions when they say the phrase ‘thank you for your service.’In most cases, it is highly likely that their intentions are to acknowledge the sacrifice and selfless service that many veterans and service members have made….”https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-war-within/201711/should-you-say -thank-you-your-service
A different perspective
“Here's How to Actually Thank Veterans for Their Service”
https://www.military.com/veterans-day/heres-how-to -actually-thank-veterans -for-their-service.html
“…1. Write a Check….
2. Donate Your Frequent-Flyer Miles….
3. Offer Your Expertise….
4. Bring in a Veteran Speaker….
5. Hire a Veteran….
6. Hire a Military Spouse or Caregiver….
7. Donate Pro Bono Hours....
8. Earmark Your Donations….
9. Volunteer….
10. Use a Veteran-Owned Business….”
MILITARY RECRUITMENT
“Army, Navy and Air Force predict recruiting shortfalls this year”
https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2023/04/19/army-navy-and-air-force-predict-recruiting-shortfalls-this-year/
“The Army, Navy and Air Force are preparing to miss their recruiting goals by
thousands this year, service leaders said…..”
According to the above article dated April 19, 2023:
Army –short 10,000 (15,000 short last year)
Navy –short 6,000
Air Force –short 10,000 including Air National Guard & Reserves
VETERANS SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS
“Veteran groups grapple with declining membership. What's at
stake if they can't bring in new blood?” https://www.foxnews.com/us/veteran-
groups-grapple-declining-membership-state-stake-bring-new -blood
American Legion members 2011 –2.4M 2021 –1.7M In just ten years, lost 700,000 members
Veterans of Foreign Wars members 2017 –1.2M 2021 –1.0M In only four years, lost 200,000 members
1945 –12.2M active-duty military Today –1.3M active-duty military
Congress has chartered 43 veteran service organizations but “The Veterans Service Organizations… most
often called before Congress for testimony on the state of Veterans Affairs, known in D.C. as ‘The Big 6,’…”
are the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled Veterans of America, The American
Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, and American
Veterans. These six organizations initiate and support legislation that I and likely many other veterans and
civilians have often taken for granted.https://veterans.house.gov/resources-for-veterans/veterans-service-
