The program will provide financial assistance to help fire departments procure equipment, supplies, and educational training designed to mitigate exposure to hazardous, cancer -causing chemicals. The objective of this program is to award matching grants to eligible fire departments on a financial -need basis, for the purchase of the equipment, supplies, and training designed to mitigate exposure to those chemicals. This grant program will only be implemented when funds have been allocated by the legislature to the Division for the grant period. The current grant period (FY 22/23) has been funded at $500,000. The fire department would like to submit a matching (75%/25%) application through the Florida Firefighter Cancer Decontamination Equipment Grant for the purchase of one -hundred (100) sets of structural firefighting gloves in various sizes (ex. small, medium, large, etc.). This would ensure that all agency members have two sets of gloves immediately available. It would also provide a small number of spare gloves that would be available to crews in the event that their primary and secondary PPE become contaminated or damaged and need to be replaced. In fire and hazmat incidents, firefighters are exposed to a multitude of chemicals and carcinogens. Over the past few years, the department has been working towards ensuring that all combat firefighters have a second set of structural firefighting jacket, pants, and boots. This practice has shown to be beneficial to the agency and its personnel by allowing more frequent cleaning of gear and ensuring that department members are in cleaner gear. Currently, department members only have a single set of structural firefighting gloves. The department would like to enhance its personal protective equipment program by issuing a second set of gloves to all combat firefighters. Issue: Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners approve submittal of the grant application for the purchase of structural firefighting gloves? Recommendations: Staff recommends the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners approve to submit the grant application.
