Subject: Discussion and Direction Regarding the 100 Year Anniversary of Ocoee Becoming a
Township. (Assistant City Manager Shadrix)
Background Summary:
At the August 1 City Commission meeting, the Mayor introduced a proclamation provided by the Florida
League of Cities commemorating the 100th anniversary of Ocoee becoming a township in November of 1923..
The Town of Ocoee was established in November 1923, and subsequently, in May 1925, the Town of
Ocoee was abolished and re-established as the City of Ocoee. The incorporation documents of 1925 are also
what we use for all our grants, and the history page on our City website confirms the recognition we are
receiving from the FLC proclamation, as it states on that page, "The Town of Ocoee was recognized as a
municipality by the Florida legislature in 1923 and became the City of Ocoee in May 1925".
The staff was asked to come back to the commission with a plan for an event commemorating this, and is
prepared to move forward with an event managed by the Community Resources division and the Parks and
Recreation department. In consideration of this item and the potential for there to be two 100-year celebrations
in two years, staff request direction from the commission on the following:
1. What is the direction of the Commission regarding 1923 vs 1925?
2. What type of activities does the Commission wish to include?
3. Based on the activities desired by the Commission, what budget is the Commission willing to expend?
