Subject: Approval of Retirement and Transfer of Ownership of Canine Nitro. (Police Chief
Plasencia)
Background Summary:
The Police Department's Canine Program currently has two officers and two canines assigned to it. One of the
canines, Nitro, an eleven -year -old Belgian Malinois, has been recommended for retirement for police work by
our contract veterinarian. As Canine Nitro has faithfully served since 2013, with 85 career apprehensions, 291
narcotics sweeps with narcotics located, and the seizure of $120,000 of drug money, the Ocoee Police
Department would like to retire Canine Nitro, declaring his status as retired and transferring ownership to
Canine Officer Daniel Schilling. Canine Officer Schilling has been Nitro's partner for most of his career. He
and his family have provided Canine Nitro off -duty care as a family member throughout his career and look
forward to Canine Nitro's full-time retirement as a family member.
Issue:
Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners declare Canine Nitro retired and transfer his ownership
to Canine Officer Daniel Schilling?
Recommendations:
It is recommended that the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners declare Canine Nitro retired and
transfer his ownership to Canine Officer Daniel Schilling so he can enjoy the rest of his canine years.
