Subject: Discussion on Road Closures in the Downtown for Special Events Due to Downtown
Infrastructure Work. (Development Services Director Rumer)
Background Summary:
The City is starting two (2) Downtown infrastructure projects that will result in the closure of i) Floral St. from
Bluford Ave to the railroad tracks on the west side, ii) Cumberland Ave from Floral St. to approximately 200
feet south of McKey Street, and iii) Oakland Ave. between Bluford Ave and Taylor Street from October 2023
and end in June of 2024. The Floral St. and Cumberland Ave construction will consist of installing a new sewer
main and the Oakland Ave work is to install a new road and all utility infrastructure. These two projects will
leave McKey Street as the only east/west connection to the business in the center of downtown. Therefore,
Staff is requesting that the City not permit any non -City -sponsored special events in the Downtown that require
road closures during the October 2023 - June 2024 construction period.
Issue:
Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners approve a temporary hold on Non -City Sponsored
Special Event Permits requiring street closures in the Downtown due to two (2) Downtown Infrastructure
Projects?
Recommendations:
Staff recommends the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners approve a temporary hold on Non -City
Sponsored Special Event Permits requiring street closures in the Downtown due to two (2) Downtown Infrastructure
Projects.
