My name is Ava Yarborough, and I currently serve as the President of the Ocoee High School
FFA Chapter and the Orange County FFA Federation Secretary. I have been an FFA member
for 5 years now and have shown numerous livestock projects throughout my time at Ocoee High
School. FFA has not only shaped me as a leader, giving me the confidence and support to stand
in front of you today, but has also guided me towards future career interests and gained
experiences that I'll share for a lifetime. As an incoming senior, I had hoped for a final school
year dedicated to working with my livestock at our FFA chapter's land lab and hosting enriching
events for the community. However, I am deeply disappointed to learn that the only road access
leading to our land lab and protected wildlife area surrounding us, has not only been poorly
evaluated by the city but also sold to an individual planning substantial development.
The onset of construction has led to the destruction of natural resources and has blocked any
access to our road unless permission is granted through legal channels. An example of how this
affects us is by the increased waste at our land lab, which necessitates frequent clumpster
replacements, yet the road closure hampers timely access. This disruption has severely affected
my routine, my chapter, and our animals.
The closure of the road has forced us to carry heavy bags of feed, weighing up to 50 pounds,
and endless supplies from the back of the school to the land lab each day. This situation is not
only physically straining but also distressing for our parents, who fear for the safety of their
children. In fact, my own mother is so concerned for my well being that she has purchased a
safety alarm for me to carry in case of an emergency. No student or parent should have to worry
about such matters when we are merely pursuing our passion for agriculture.
Moreover, with the lack of privacy, we now face the intrusion of workers interacting with our
animals, and walkers on the West Orange Trail feeding them unknown substances. Additionally,
displaced wildlife from the construction site is seeking refuge in our area, attacking our animals
and causing significant financial losses. We no longer have the privacy necessary for the safety
of our livestock projects.
This situation is impacting not only our chapter members and their families but also our
dedicated advisors and teachers, who strive daily to provide us with the best opportunities. But
with these new restrictions, we feel helpless and unheard.
Therefore, my question is this: Why do you dismiss the concerns of an organization such as our
highly recognized and award winning FFA program, supported by the dedicated members,
alumni, businesses, and citizens you see before you? Why do you treat the future generation
with such little care and compassion? Why do you stand by without questioning such hasty
decisions that have far-reaching consequences?
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Good evening, my name is Colton Glover and I want to thank you all for showing up and taking
time to be here and support our chapter.
Our land lab is not just a plot of land with crops and animals. It is a living, breathing classroom
where our future leaders, and farmers are nurtured and cultivated. It is a place where we learn the
value of hard work, responsibility, and compassion. It is a sanctuary from the noise and chaos of
the modern world, where we can connect with the earth and learn from its wisdom.
And our FFA program is not just a club or an extracurricular activity. It is a family, a community, a
network of support and encouragement for young minds eager to make a difference. It is a
training ground for the next generation of agricultural leaders and innovators.
FFA and being a part of the show team has taught me a large amount of lessons such as the
priority of hard work and leadership. I still remember when I was sitting in my first Ag. Classroom
and I didn't know anyone, that was until one of my classmates told me that u should join FFA so I
hesitantly joined and I found a love for the association and I have built so many friendships and
that is all because of FFA.
Not allowing FFA students access to this road puts our students at risk for a number of safety
concerns. Using the road allowed parents to drop off/ pick up in close proximity to the land lab.
That is no longer an option, leaving our students to walk a much further distance unsupervised
sometimes early in the morning and late in the evening. The land lab is not supervised 24/7,
parents need to be able to see where their children are, or be close in the event of an emergency.
Like with any new development, there always comes harsh consequences for the surrounding
area. Unfortunately, this time it affects the future development of the students who have poured
their heart and soul into this program.
Taking this access to this road, and our program could take away chances for college, and
scholarships for some of the students in this program.
I urge each and every one of you to consider that this is bigger than just a new development. This
could mean the future for many of these students.
Thank you for your time.

My name is Kevin Maguire. I would like to share with you my experience I had with a
tennis instructor who was teaching lessons adjacent to the pickleball court where my daughter
and I were playing. The park we frequent is named Tiger Minor Park. This park is right next to
the development, Prima Vista. This is where we own our house. To cut to the chase, it ended
with him letting me know that he was a Vietnam War Veteran, he knows good Asians from bad
Asians, he would take a bullet for some, he wouldn't take a bullet for me, and then added, he
would shoot me. He was teaching an Asian family while he was in full rant, mind you. My
daughter (26), was there to witness this encounter and would be happy to corroborate the
following events that took place.
Let me start from the beginning. It's quite simple really. There are three courts at this
park. Two are tennis courts and one is a pickleball court. I recognize this gentleman for he has
been there teaching for the many times over the years that I have frequented. He drives a
vintage Volkswagen Van (green in color if I recall correctly). He was in the far court where he
takes post and we were on the Pickleball court furthest away from him. There is one tennis
court between us. This was around 5:40 pm on Sunday, June 16, 2024. During our playing,
tennis balls would roll into our court. I understand that this occasionally happens. I coached
tennis for Pine Castle Christian Academy for awhile back in the late 2000s. We would send
them back his way toward the back fence.
However, this pattern did not stop. During a point, a ball would find its way onto our
court. I would send them back but with less care, hitting the balls on the floor with my paddle
and sending it their way. A few of them managed to find their way onto their court while they
were playing. He was quick to reprimand me and let me know that we need to send them back
to the fence because they could break their ankles with balls sent onto the court. Which of
course was my frustration throughout the course of time. So I responded with, "Yeah, Etiquette."
Hoping he would get the irony of his reprimand and hope things would just adjust.
The next three balls that came onto our court, I put on my paddle, and calmly walked it
over to his hopper of balls and returned them. He then said, you don't have to bring them all the
way over here. This is where I addressed the issue. I politely said, we were speaking of tennis
court etiquette, while I understand that some balls occasionally find their way onto other courts,
generally, the common thing to do while teaching lessons and sharing courts is to gather balls
between exercises and place them back into the hopper so no stray balls have a chance to find
their way onto other courts, due to incline of courts leaning one way, or one ball rolling and
hitting another.
He did not take kindly to this and was not welcoming my input. My daughter was
standing there with me the whole time. He said that is the dumbest thing he has ever heard and
My daughter and I left the courts.
I am writing to you as a resident of Ocoee, Fl. I am writing to you as a concerned father
and parent, whose Father's Day fun at the park was met with some concerning racial threats. I
am writing to you as a Tennis coach, who has witnessed a man who seems to have gotten a bit
too comfortable on the courts he calls his. I'm afraid his ego and prejudices get in the way of his
better judgment.
I live right next to this park. It's the park I would like to go to. I would like to think that the
city would not tolerate, employ, or enable any vendor to take right and residence of a public spot
that shares these points of views and is more than happy to threaten anyone, regardless of
race. I would like to think that my solution isn't that I must find another park, but rather, in lieu of
the situation, you are more than happy to not employ or empower this gentlemen to coach and
set an example to the many youths and families he obviously teaches, and to not take residence
in this park or any other Ocoee park.
This started off as a debate on where and how to retrieve HIS tennis balls and in a
matter of minutes, jumping to my Vietnamese heritage, him being a Vietnam War Veteran, his
expertise in sifting out the good from the bad Asians, and deducing that I would be one of the
ones he would shoot. Again, all in front of an Asian family he was teaching.
I would like to feel safe going to my local public park. Knowing we employ a man who
has deemed me an Asian worth shooting doesn't sit well with me. I am requesting a response
and would like to know what actions, if any, will be considered to remedy the situation. I am
requesting the name of this individual. I understand that the city empowers him to take station
on these courts so I'm assuming you have that information. As I said, he was unwilling to share
his name, which is further admission to his poor judgment, aggression and words. I look forward
to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Kevin Maguire
