Subject: Approval of the Retirement of Police Canine "Reno". (Police Chief Ogburn)
Background Summary:
The City of Ocoee Police Department’s Canine Program currently consists of three officers and their respective
canine partners. One of these canines, "Reno," an eleven-year-old Belgian Malinois, has been recommended for
retirement by our contract veterinarian. Reno has faithfully served since 2015, with 43 career apprehensions and 81
narcotics sweeps, with successful narcotics discoveries, and now the Ocoee Police Department would like to retire
him. His ownership will be transferred to his handler, Officer Eric Edwards, who has been Reno’s partner
throughout most of his career. Officer Edwards and his family have cared for Reno off-duty as a beloved member of
their family and look forward to welcoming him into full-time retirement.
Issue:
Should the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners declare Canine "Reno" retired and transfer ownership to his
handler, Officer Eric Edwards?
Recommendations:
It is recommended that the Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners declare Canine "Reno" retired and transfer
his ownership to Officer Eric Edwards, so he can enjoy the rest of his canine years.
