W~Qe3a.QeD, \!traffic crashes cause more than 43,000 fatalities each year and are the
leading cause of death for people ages 6 to 33. In the state of Florida there
were 3,533 traffic related deaths in the year of2005;
W~Qe3a.QeD. Jfn 2005 Florida experienced 2,325 traffic deaths of drivers and passengers in
Seat Belt Equipped Vehicles. The tragic note of this is 62.1 % (1,444) of these
people killed were not wearing seat belts.
W~Qe3a.QeD, ~lcohol-related crashes account for 31 percent of all traffic fatalities in the
state of Florida for the year of2005;
W~Qe3a.QeD, t'llhanksgiving 2005 Holiday experienced the highest fatality rate per hour
(0.55) with 66 people killed in the 120 hour holiday period. 45.5% (30) of
these fatalities had alcohol involved in the crash;
W~Qel\QeD, 18eaths and injuries on U. S. highways cost society over $150 billion
annually;
W~Qe3a.QeD, ~afer driving behaviors such as the use of seat belts, not drinking and driving
and obeying traffic laws would dramatically reduce the number of traffic-
related injuries and deaths;
W~Qe3a.QeD, '(!j;he cost-effective roadway safety improvements such as all-weather signing
and markings, traffic signals, skid resistant pavements and removal of
roadside hazards could also greatly reduce the number of traffic crashes;
W~Qf31\Qfa~, mhe continued development of safer vehicles and protective traffic safety equipment
such as helmets will enhance people's ability to protect themselves and their families from
preventable and tragic permanent injuries and deaths;

and call upon everyone to help save lives by spreading these important messages throughout our
communities.
