I Background Summary:
The Community Grant Review Board met on April 23, 2008 to discuss the 18 applications received during
the second cycle of the Quarterly Community Grant Program (formerly the Community Merit Awards
Program). The Quarterly Community Grant Program provides financial grants of up to $500 made to Ocoee
non-profit organizations and civic groups outside City limits which benefit residents of Ocoee. The grants
are awarded to acknowledge excellence and further the contributions these local organizations bring to the
Ocoee community.
The Community Grant Review Board expressed that they would like to award various amounts to 17
organizations. The Grant Review Board denied the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Mid Florida
Chapter's grant application. There was no Multiple Sclerosis Society representative present at the meeting,
and the Grant Review Board stated that they had questions about the MS Society's application. Spring
lake Elementary submitted (2) grant applications. The Grant Review Board denied one of Spring lake's
applications stating that the community grant bylaws only allow the Grant Review Board to grant $500 to
one entity.
Ocoee Middle School submitted an application requesting a $500 grant for their School Nurse Program.
However, their application was not forwarded to the Grant Review Board. OMS School Nurse Program was
awarded a $500 community grant from the City in the past. Based on this, staff is recommending that
Ocoee Middle School be approved for their $500 community grant request.
There is $7,500 allotted for this quarter of the Community Grant Program There is an additional $3,000
available that rolled over from the first grant cycle held in January 2008.. The total amount requested from
the organizations this grant cycle is $9,500. The Community Grant Review Board voted to fund 17
organizations in the amount of $7,250 to stay within the allotted funding for the current grant cycle.
Attached is the minutes from the Community Grant Review Board's meeting held on April 23, 2008.
The deadline for community groups to submit applications for the 3rd quarter of the grant program is July
7th.
