Proclamation
.undreds of children could be saved each year if communities
take steps to make pedestrian safety a priority; and
~ lack of physical activity plays a leading role in rising rates
of obesity, diabetes, and other health problems among
children, and being able to walk or bicycle to school offers an
opportunity to build activity into daily routine; and
J)riving students to school by private vehicle contributes to
traffic congestion and air pollution; and
~n important role for parents and caregivers is to teach
children about pedestrian safety and become aware of the
difficulties and dangers that children face on their trip to
school each day, and the health and environmental risks
related to physical inactivity and air pollution; and
(:ommunity leaders and parents can determine the
"walkability" of their community by using a walkability
checklist; and
(:itizens and leaders should make a plan for immediate
changes to enable children to safety walk and bicycle in our
communities, and develop a list of suggestions for
improvements that can be done over time; and
WJp€l\.€D, (:hildren, parents and community leaders around the world
are joining together to walk to school and evaluate walking
and bicycling conditions in their communities;

Ul:raffic crashes cause more than 41,059 fatalities each year and is the
leading cause of death for people ages 6 to 33; and
~lcohol-related crashes account for 32 percent of all traffic fatalities; and
tloor road conditions and obsolete designs contribute to more than 15,000
highway deaths annually; and
11Beaths and injuries on U. S. highways cost in the United States in 2006
over $230.6 billion annually; and
$afer driving behaviors such as the use of seat belts, not drinking and
driving and obeying traffic laws would dramatically reduce the number of
traffic-related injuries and deaths; and
Ul:he cost-effective roadway safety improvements such as all-weather
signing and markings, traffic signals, skid resistant pavements, and
removal of road side hazards could also greatly reduce the number of
traffic crashes; and
Ul:he continued development of safer vehicles and protective traffic safety
equipment such as helmets will enhance people's ability to protect
themselves and their families from preventable and tragic permanent
injuries and deaths;
