AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF OCOEE, FLORIDA
RELATING TO A UNIFORM BUILDING NUMBERING
SYSTEM; ADOPTING A NEW SECTION 5-59
OF ARTICLE II OF CHAPTER 5 OF THE CODE
OF ORDINANCES; PROVIDING FOR THE
ASSIGNMENT OF NUMBERS BY THE BUILDING
OFFICIAL; REQUIRING ALL BUILDINGS TO
PROPERLY DISPLAY ASSIGNED NUMBERS;
PROVIDING FOR ENFORCEMENT; PROVIDING
FOR SEVERABILITY; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE
DATE.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OCOEE,
FLORIDA.
SECTION l. The City Commission of the City of Ocoee has
the authority to adopt this Ordinance pursuant to Article VIII
of the Constitution of the State of Florida and Chapter 166,
Florida Statutes.
SECTION 2. A ne~ Section 5-59 of Article II of Chapter
5 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Ocoee, Florida, is
hereby enacted to read as follows:
Section 5-59. Building Numbering
(a) The purpose of this Section shall be to create
a uniform numbering system for the display of address numbers
on buildings and structures located within the City of Ocoee,
and to provide for easier identification of locations by emergency
response personnel.
(b) The building official shall assign numbers to
all buildings in the City other than accessory buildings. Ac-
cessory buldings are structures which are clearly incidental
or subordinate to and customarily utilized adjacent to and in
connection with a principal building located on the same lot.
(c) All buildings shall have the assigned building
4It number properly displayed, whether or not mail is delivered
to the building. The posting of the building number shall be
the responsibility of both the owner and occupant of the building
and shall comply with the following requirements:
(1) The building number shall be affixed to
the front of the building, such as a mailbox,
post, wall or fence, so that it is visible
and legible from the public or private
street on which the building fronts.
(2) The number shall be in Arabic numerals unless
otherwise approved by the zoning administrator.
Decorative numbers or other numbers that

are difficult to read will not be approved.
(3) The numbering shall be of a weather-resistant
material permanently affixed to the front
of the building or structure.
(4) The building numbers shall not be less than
three (3) inches in height and shall be
of a color that will contrast with the immed-
iate background material.
(5) A property owner or his agent shall have
the responsibility for contacting the city
zoning department to determine the correct
building number or numbers to be assigned
to all buildings located or constructed
on his property in the City after the effective
date of this article. The owner or his
agent shall post the building number in
accordance with this Section prior to the
building's occupancy. A certificate of
occupancy shall not be issued until the
zoning administrator has verified that the
building has been properly numbered in accor-
dance with this article.
(d) This Section shall be enforceable pursuant
. to Chapter 7.5 and Section 1.8 of the Code of Ordinances. Existing
buildings shall be brought into compliance with building numbering
requirements within 90 days from the effective date of this
Section.
SECTION 3. Severability. If any section, subsection,
sentence, clause, phrase or portion of this Ordinance is for
any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by any court of

competent jurisdiction, such portion shall be deemed a separate,
distinct and independent provision and such holding shall not
affect the validity of the remaining portion hereto.
SECTION 4. Effective Date. This Ordinance shall become
effective immediately upon passage and adoption.
