HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-03-1968 SS I I I MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF OCOEE, FLORIDA HELD: April 3, 1968 PRESENT: Comm. Hager, Hamby, Reese, Vandergrift and Mayor Minor ABSENT: None Special meeting called to order by Hayor Hinor at 7:30 P. H. Special meeting called in behalf of the city and the Teen Council. Mayor Minor called on Mr. Frank Turner, president of Jayces, to speak in behalf of the Teen CounciL Mr. Turner stated he would like to know why the City Council requested the lights be turned on for Teen-agers dances. Mayor Minor replied that he had been informed by an Orange County Deputy Sheriff that they suspected dope and marijuana cigarettes were being distributed at these Teen-age dances. The Deputy Sheriff stated he thought this supply was coming from Orlando and Pine Hills area and being distributed in Ocoee. He asked that the City Council cooperate and request that lights be left on during these dances. Louis Robb, Chairman of the Teen Council, stated he had talked with Dave Starr, Orange Co. Sheriff and he said he had no reports on dope in this area. Also~ the Deputy was out of line when he asked the City Council to have lights on. Mr. Robbe stated the Teen Council would agree to add more colored lights, and would "like for the City Council to go along with this idea, until definite proof of dope being distributed was proven. A Representative from the Jaycees asked the Council's opinion. Mayor Minor asked Mr. Turner what his suggestion on the lights would be. He stated one (1) light in each four (4) corners in green and blue color be installed. Comm. Hager suggested a gentlemen agreement, that the Council and Teen Council trust each other. Comm. Vandergrift motioned that they;(the City Council) go inside the building and investigate the lightening situation before making any decision. To find out where and if lights are needed. Motion died for lack of second. Comm. Hager suggested they use temporary lights for the next two Saturday night dances and that the Council go and investigate when convenient. Comm. Vandergrift motioned to set aside other motion and make on-sitasinspection Saturday night week, April 13th, and use temporary lights for the next two Saturday Nights. Reason for on-site inspection to see where to install permanent lights. These lights to be paid out o~ recreation dung. Comm. Hamby seconded. No No's Motion carried. Mr. Turner expressed his appreciation for the Special Meeting for the Teen Council and their effort in getting this situation straightened out. There being no further business, Comm. Vandergrift motioned the Special meeting adjourn. Comm. Hamby seconded, thereupon Special Meeting of the Council adjourned at 8;30 P. M. Attest: 9~ ~L..{1, - ~lerk
