HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 92-03 RESOLUTION 92-03 A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF <>COEE, FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF THE SURFACE WATER IMPROVEMENT AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAM. WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature created the Surface Water Improvement And Management Act Of 1987, as amended, for the purpose of protecting, preserving, and restoring the surface water resources of the State of Florida; and WHEREAS, the welfare and economy of the residents of Ocoee are linked inextricably with the preservation of state-wide and nearby surface water resources and the maintenance of the natural productivity, diversity and environmental quality of these systems; and . WHEREAS, Lake Apopka is located near the City of Ocoee and Lake Apopka is one of Florida's most polluted lakes; and WHEREAS, the State of Florida, Department Of Environmental Regulation, and the State's water management district, are actively addressing the responsibilities assigned to them by the Surface Water Improvement And Management Act Of 1987, as amended, regarding Lake Apopka; and WHEREAS, the Act directs the water management districts to develop and implement management plans for the preservation and/or restoration of surface water bodies of state and regional significance; and WHEREAS, the St. Johns River Water Management District, in cooperation with the State of Florida, Department Of Environmental Regulation and other resource management agencies, have initiated and are actively implementing an adopted Surface Water Improvement And Management Plan for Lake Apopka; and WHEREAS, the successfu.l restorat.ion of :T.,akeApo!;)ka. would yield significant economic and recreational benefits to the City of Ocoee, surrounding communities and the State of Florida; and WHEREAS, the completion and successful implementation of the Plan will require a continuing State commitment to the Surface Water Improvement And Management Act Of 1987, as amended, and the provision of adequate funding to fulfill the requirements of the Act and Legislative mandates; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Ocoee, Florida, that it fully supports the goals and objectives of the Surface Water Improvement And Management Act Of 1987, as amended, and the State of Florida's commitment to the protection, preservation, and restoration of our irreplaceable surface water resources; and . BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Ocoee, Florida requests the support of the Florida Legislature in ensuring that adequate funds are appropriated to the Surface Water Improvement And Management Trust Fund to fully and completely implement the adopted Surface Water Improvement And Management Plan for Lake Apopka for the 1992 fiscal year and beyond. ~ih.
