ABSENT: None. -
The organizational meeting of the Ocoee Cemetery
Advisory Committee was held in the Conference Room in City
Hall, and began informally at 7:30 P.M.. Commissioner
Johnson led in introductions and thanked the members for
their willingness to serve.
Key areas of concern about the cemetery discussed during
the meeting were expansion, maintenance, and improvements.
Four acres of land owned by the Hawthornes were
mentioned as a possibility for expansion. There was general
agreement that additional land should be acquired as soon as
possible. Mr. Breeze pointed out that any discussion with
landowners should be in the province of the City Staff and
the Commission. Mr. Elmore said that area in the present
cemetery could be improved to provide about one - hundred
additional lots.
In discussion of general concerns about maintenance of
the cemetery, Mrs. Hager asked about maintenance of the
markers and the pavillion. Mr. Elmore responded that the
pavillion was painted lest summer, and agreed that it needed
more work. He also explained that the men who maintain the
cemetery try to be careful around the markers, but their lob
is made more difficult by markers and borders which are in
violation of the regulations governing the new section of the
cemetery. He suggested that better maintenance could he '
achieved with a part -time worker for four hours a day, five
days a week, whose sole responsibility would be the cemetery.
Among the improvements suggested were general
landscaping, installation of a sprinkler system, the addition
of berms, and movement of the fence. Improvements discussed
for the entrance were the addition of a street light,
upgrading /replacement of the bridge, and a new sign like
the new ones for the city's parks. Commissioner Johnson
suggested that Boy Scouts might assist with improvements for
the entrance and landscaping of the berms.
Commissioner Johnson stated that a Chairman should be
selected. Mrs. Minor recommended Bill Breeze, but he
declined due to other responsibilities. Mr. Breeze nominated
Sam Woodson, who graciously agreed to serve as Chairmen and
was appointed by unanimous consent.
