HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-01-89 MINUTES OF OCOEE CEMETERY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON JUNE 1, 1989 PRESENT: Chairman Sam Woodson, Betty Hager, Bill Breeze, Sharon Levins, City Manager Shapiro, Buddy Elmore, and Deputy Clerk Green. ABSENT: Nell Minor and Commissioner Johnson Chairman Woodson called the meeting to order at 7:34 P.M.. Minutes of the May 4th meeting were distributed. Bill Breeze moved that the minutes be approved as presented, Sharon Levins seconded and approval was unanimous. City Manager Shapiro explained that he had joined the committee for this meeting to consider policy and methodology for the cemetery. He wanted to find out what was good or bad with the cemetery's current status and to determine where the committee would like to see it head. Members responded that they would like to see more land obtained for cemetery expansion, a full time caretaker provided to maintain it, a resurvey of the current site to permit platting of all possible lots, and a provision for perpetual care. loisw Mr. Shapiro agreed that a resurvey was urgently needed and that it was most important for a cemetery to have a well - maintained, finished look. He commented that the cemetery had not been run as a business in the past, and that the current cemetery should be run well before considering expansion. He recommended that the cemetery be removed from the Street Department budget and have its own line item. He said he would strongly support making the cemetery an ad valorem responsibility and the setting aside of all income from the cemetery as a perpetual care fund. Bill Breeze moved to recommend to the Board of Commissioners that a survey be made of all unplatted land within the cemetery creating as many new plots as possible. Sharon Levins seconded and approval was unanimous. Mr. Shapiro said that he would meet with the attorney, Buddy Elmore, City Clerk Jean Grafton, and Deputy Clerk Green to update the cemetery code. The revised code will be brought back to members for their consideration at the next meeting. Subject to conflicts, the next meeting was scheduled for Thursday, July 6th at 7.30 P.M. in the conference room in City Hall.
