HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-24-89 MINUTES OF OCOEE CEMETERY ADVISORY COMMITTEE SPECIAL MEETING HELD ON APRIL 24, 1989 PRESENT: Chairman Sam Woodson, Nell Minor, Betty Hager, Sharon Levins, Commissioner Rusty Johnson, Street Supervisor Buddy Elmore, Garry Smith, and Deputy Clerk Green. ABSENT: Bill Breeze was out of town. Chairman Woodson called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M.. Items distributed to members were: Minutes of the April 6th meeting, the new monument permit form, and the Cemetery Rules and Regulations document provided to those who purchase cemetery lots with a suggested revision of Number 15 of the General Rules. Mr. Woodson explained that City Manager Ellis Shapiro had directed the Cemetery Committee to reconsider the restriction of use of artificial flowers in the Cemetery. At the Commission Meeting held on April 18th, citizens had appealed to the Commission about permitting use of artificial flowers due to the high cost of fresh flowers. The revised version of General Rule Number 15 read as follows: "Flowers and other symbols of tribute may be temporarily placed upon graves. The receptacles for these flowers must, however, be a flush mounting device as part of the monument, or disposable. Symbols of tribute may include fresh or artificial flowers, wreaths, potted plants, or baskets. Except for the funeral period, arrangements should be placed on the monument /grave area only. The area surrounding graves should remain clear for maintenance. Arrangements that become wilted, faded, or unsightly, will be removed by City employees." Nell Minor moved to approve Rule Number 15 as changed, Betty Hager seconded, and the motion was unanimously approved. The change in Rule 15 will be presented to the Commission for their approval at their Special Meeting to be held on April 27th. The discrepancy in regulations for borders on cemetery lots was discussed. Section 7 -12, (b), of the Ocoee Code stipulates that there shall be no posts, chains, or other markers protruding out of the ground by more than two inches bordering on any lot within the cemetery. The Monument portion of the Rules and Regulations which have been being distributed for several years states that there shall be no posts, chains, or otherwise bordering or marking the lot. Members agreed that the regulations needed to be consistent and suggested continuing discussion at their next meeting about changing the code to eliminate borders on lots and to require markers to be flush with the ground. The next meeting had been scheduled for Thursday, May 4th at 7:30 P.M. in the conference room in City Hall. Page 2 Ocoee Cemetery Committee April 24, 1989 The meeting adjourned at 6:35 P.M..
