HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-06-89 MINUTES OF OCOEE CEMETERY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON APRIL 6, 1989 PRESENT: Chairman Sam Woodson, Nell Minor, Betty Hager, Bill Breeze, Garry Smith, and Deputy Clerk Green. ABSENT: Sharon Levins, Buddy Elmore, and Commissioner Johnson. Chairman Woodson called the meeting to order at 7 :34 P.M.. Minutes of the March 2nd meeting had been distributed and were approved as presented. Mr. Woodson reported that the Commission had approved the revised Rules and Regulations which had been submitted to them for their consideration on April 4th. One of the revisions approved by the Commission was a Monument Placement Permit. The Commission directed the Cemetery Advisory Committee to suggest an appropriate fee for the permit subject to the approval of the City Manager. Mr. Breeze pointed out that the charge should be enough to cover the City's cost. After general discussion, Mr. Breeze recommended that the fee for locating and marking the grave and supervising the installation of the monument should be set at $20.00. Agreement with a $20.00 fee was unanimous. In a recap of accomplishments for the Cemetery during the last year, Mr. Woodson listed the increased rates charged for Cemetery lots (now $200 for residents and $500 for non - residents), the preparation and approval of a new format for the Cemetery deed, the approval of changes in the Rules and Regulations, and the improved appearance of the Cemetery through the efforts of Buddy and Garry. The clerk reported that a former resident who was now disabled and living on social security in subsidized housing had asked if she might purchase a lot at the resident rate. She had been unable to find housing in Ocoee that she could afford in her current circumstances. After some discussion, members agreed that Section 7 -7 of the Ocoee Code would not prevent a friend who is a resident from purchasing the lot for her. The possibility of adding a mausoleum to the cemetery had been mentioned at the last meeting. Copies of a price list and a brochure from the Newton Mausoleums Construction Corporation were distributed. It was suggested that a mausoleum might be a good use for the northeast corner of the Cemetery. The feasibility of permitting construction of a mausoleum which would not be owned by the City was discussed. Mr. Breeze commented that, while a mausoleum would be a judicious use of space, the City should own and control any mausoleum in the Ocoee Cemetery. After further discussion, Mrs. Minor recommended that further consideration of adding a mausoleum be tabled, and other members concurred. kir 1 Page 2 Ocoee Cemetery Committee l,, April 6, 1989 The next meeting was scheduled for Thursday, May 4th at 7:30 P.M. in the conference room in City Hall.
